Long ago and far away I used to want to be a Teacher's Assistant. But TA's are required to drive a bus. Well, that's not going to happen. I already hate how big my truck is (4x4 Off road Crew - Dh's pick, not mine. It's nice but not my first choice. Mine would be WAY smaller, WAY faster and would have no back seat  ) And I think driving a school bus should be considered a completely different job in it's self.

    So.

I have my paper work ready to turn to be a Sub.

Any one else out there do or has done Sub work? Care to share pros and cons?
Please reply ...or PM if you want.

Parents! Your opinions on Subs? (to be used as tips to be a better Sub)

Big Thanks to any one with info!!

I think it's an awesome idea! Subs are needed more than people think. And especially good subs.

PS... Driving a bus ain't THAT bad. ;)

I did it for several years (and was a TA too). I loved it....

Just know that they WILL test you. Each day that you start in a new class, they are going to see how far they can push you. I tried being the nice "cool" person hoping they would enjoy that and 'behave' but it didnt go that way. I soon learned to start out a little tough and then I could back down as the day went on (if the class allowed)

I started out only in elementary school, but the high school called begging. I tried it and that was NOT my cup of tea.

It was a nice check at the end of the month and I loved the flexibility of saying no. (but if you say no too often they wont call as often)

    Good luck...

PS- I enjoyed being a TA better, got to know the kids and routine... but that is just me. (hated the bus, but...)

That's what I keep hearing ...but I hear a lot of complaints too... maybe they just have more unruly kids on their busses...

Then there is the problem that my kids were grandfathered into WCES (they were scheduled to go to Cleveland) and in the agreement I have to supply transportation.

just make sure that if you do sub to at least show up when you're called. lol
my daughter was in class one day this week with no teacher at all. the teacher was out and the sub didn't show all day. i called the school to ask about it and they didn't even know there was no teacher for that class. i was hot.

Go for it, Nsane! I just hope the students treat you better than my peers and I treated subs back in the day.

I love teaching and am thinking about getting back into it part time. There's nothing better than helping young folks work toward their goals.:)

    Best of luck to you.

I think you would make a fine bus driver.

whoever said start out being tougher than you think you need to be is on the money --
know that some teachers are way better at leaving good sub plans than others --sometimes plans are poor because there truly was a last minute emergency (although most administrators require some emergency sub plans that can be implemented should the need arise)
don't hesitate to ask for assistance either from a neighboring teacher or the administration --especially if you don't know the emergency procedures for that school -- you never know if its fire drill or tornado drill day --
leave detailed notes about your day so the returning teacher will know what went on -- note the good kids as well as the bad
most teachers don't care for subs who rearrange their desks and rooms -resist the temptation no matter how disorganized you think the room is--
if you are handing out and taking up simple straightforward worksheets where there is a right or a wrong answer - it can be helpful to grade them -- however if the work demands a judgement call - leave it for the teacher
don't discuss personal issues or talk about other students with your class don't offer your opinion of the absent teacher either --
i have been a sub for a long time and have seen very successful and good subs and then i have seen the subs from well you know where
you will find you like certain schools more than others certain teachers to sub for more than others and certain grades that you are more comfortable with than others -- it is an on the job learning experience --

    subs

I am 19. I am a cert sub for JoCo. I love it. I am also going to school to teach though. So maybe im just one of those crazy ppl who are just called for children. Theres alot of difficulty. If it werent for my classes in school (to teach) i wouldnt be as successful i dont believe. It takes more out of you to get the class "straight" (calm) than to actually do what the teacher left you to do. I have, on the other hand, work at the school i sub at, so it may be easier for me also because they know me better than just a random person filling in. I do love it though.
If your that against driving a bus, its really not as bad as you think. Alot of our TA's do not complain. You only have either morn or after. Not both. And thats an extra paystub at the end of the month! Not that horrible. PLus you know the kids, there the same ones everyday, and if your a TA than you work at the school they go to.
