I just got my electric bill today and it has tripled. I would like to know what we the Public can do to stop these outrages bills. They say the new meters are so accurate, but my bill triples. I know it has been cold but come on. Is there someone to contact to put a stop to this over charging? What about an energy co-op? Progress Energy is getting away with murder and there is nothing we can do about it?

Good Luck!! I think it is just the cold, cold weather.

    You can

    1. stop using electricity
    2. stop using electricity

All in all, my husband contracts with Progress Energy and he says if you can get almost all of N.C to stop using electricity for a day, it will bring Progress Energy to it's knee's.

Guess who the co-op buys electricity from? You have it, Progress Energy.

Hey, I wish you lot's of luck. Let me know what you find out.

Yep, I have to say that having gas heat has been so much more affordable and has kept my electric bill pretty affordable.

I find that you can generate a lot of free BTU's by Burning the bill from Progress Energy.

My bill last month was $94.00
    This month $123.00
    24% more, not 3x.

Nuclear power, build more, protect your pocket book and fight climate change at the same time.

I noticed mine was much higher as well, about 40% and we run our gas logs all evening to heat the house. I am not sure where the huge jump has come from either. I am glad we were not the only one's that noticed!

The jump probably came when the temp and humidity outside fails to produce the optimum condition for a heat pump to work and that strip heater came on.

I run a gas pack. And I designed the house it's in. If your in one of the homes being built now, "Rome in a Day" construction methods, you need to evaluate your insulation. Progress will come out for free to do an evaluation. Better to throw the money into your house then their pocket.

I went there and read the info, and as much as I hate to admit it I didn't understand it. A person like me needs baby language. And to let everyone know my bill went to 300.00 for one month. The highest I have ever been is around 100.00. My house is 1383 sq. feet and the heat is one 68 all the time. Progress Energy is sending out someone today. But I bet there is nothing wrong. I am just so frustrated. There has to be a better way.

My mom called and questioned her bill because it doubled. It was the highest bill she has had in that house in the 20 years she has lived there. She received a letter yesterday saying it was accurate. She runs her gas logs when she is home as well. My bill went up by $20 this past month. That is an understandable jump due to the cold weather we have had. My neighbor decided to drop his thermostat down to 30 ... "just enough so his pipes won't freeze". As long as I work, I'm going to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer! In saying that, we keep it on 66 in our home and I do wear sweatpants and a L/S shirt when I am home in the winter.
