Hi, my child needs help with reading comprehsion (3rd grade level). He got a reading tutor at school on Wednesday and Thursday for an hour each. I feel it's not enough for him because he's still struggling with reading and has shown no improvement still. Is there any places where I can take him for reading tutor? Thanks!
Not trying to start anything, cake, but how much do you read with him, to him, and listen (actively) to him read? It doesn't have to be mundane material. Find out what he'd like to read to you. If he's into Nascar, get him some materials on nascar and share reading it to each other. If he's into fishing, find some fishing related stuff. start small, and build on success. I've found that having a reader to "preread" the material by looking at the pictures and trying to see what the story will relate to is a good step. Follow that with looking for obvious clues. And then have him read it aloud. "chunk" the materials such that you can ask him what the last passage he read means. (Kinda like eating an elephant, which I'm told can be done easily, one bite at a time) Ask him to summarize what he has read. When he completes the story, ask for a total summarization. Point out that he should look for clues that author gives...use of frequently repeated words or phrases (I do not like Green Eggs and Ham) or use of punctuation...whether the author poses several questions, or makes strong statements by using exclamatory writing. Asking the librarian and the teachers for their help is critical. All of us like to help those who want to help themselves. Read to him, and listen, really listen, to him read to you. Good Luck!
Thanks for your advice - I really appreciate it. We tried very hard, even though both my husband and I are unable to talk and hear (we have disabilities). His grade wasn't good on both reading and language mainly it's because of our disabilities. That's the reason why he need tutors to assist him with reading and language.
That is totally awesome Cake how hard you are trying for your child. Maybe on a lower cost side you could contact the high school and see if any students are willing to tutor in the evenings or weekends.
Cake, I humbly and abjectly apologize if my words were insulting or demeaning. That was never my intent. Kaci has an excellent suggestion. And there are seniors and Scouts, and all other types of folks who might be able to help out. Retired teachers are a good bet, also. You know that if they lasted long enough to retire, they were teaching for a love of education, not the luxurious financial lifetstyle that public teaching in NC affords. H6
I had a friend who enrolled her child at Sylvan last year. They were a little pricey - but the child really seemed to enjoy going there and it did seem to be very helpful.
Check with the office at your child's school. They often have a list of tutors for hire. You may also ask if they can put out a note to teachers at the school. There may be a teacher interested in making a few extra $.
Reading/parents fault????? I too had this problem with my daughter, and have been reading to her since she was old enough to sit still and listen. In kindergarden was a stuggle with her teacher in getting help. Now she is in first grade and I didn't find out till after the holidays that she was again struggling. Even though we read at home everynight and my family works with her as well. I think alot of the problems is they focus on "site words" and not phonics. What is the point in knowing the word by site, if they can't sound out the letters or words? Phonics is the key here. So I went and found out there is a program at the school where she is pulled out of class and I too looked in to finding someone to work with her after school. Her teacher is doing this now. Since I have done this, she has come so far, it is amazing..I no longer read to her, she reads to me! It's a wonderful thing. I wouldn't go as far as blaming the parents, it's always the parents they say..nope not here..I worked with my daughter and I worked hard with her. I do have a hearing disability, but I love to read and I loved working with her. If the teacher had told me about this program at the start of schoo, just think where we would be now? I have for the last 3 months visit the school every week, sometimes twice a week to make sure all is still going well. Not waiting till it's to late after testing to find out she is behind..never again. Rush
I have to agree with you on this suggestion. While they are a bit on the expensive side, they do work very well with children at all grade levels. It's been awhile since my son graduated from high school, but he attended Sylvan for math and they were awesome.
