I have yet to find a good seafood restaurant here, away from the shore. They don't know how to do anything except deep fry it with excessive breading and throw hushpuppies all over it with soggy french fries. What I'd give for a good bisque of Maryland crab and a good rendition of blackened catfish with crawfish etouffee!
Sunny Side too Whatever you do DO NOT go to Sunny Side Too in Garner. We had the worst dining expeience I have ever had in 44 years. We were waited on by the rudest guy. We never got our food and the owner was no help! I emailed them and never heard from them.
Re: Sunny Side too Just tonite I heard just the opposite about SunnySide... our bartender and the owner of McKinleys just ate there Tuesday night and said it was great. So you know, being in the restaurant business themselves they're pretty critical of other places. I haven't tried it yet, but am willing to give it a shot some night.
Update on seafood restaurants I was out New Bern Ave. in Raleigh today and noticed that Last Catch Seafood Restaurant has closed. Also of note is we have eliminated Neptunes in Smithfield from our list of seafood restaurants for return visits. Our recent visits have been less than satisfactory. The last 2 times in the evening the baked potatoes were bad. Both times we complained we were told we had been given a baked potato left over from lunch. They said we should ask for a "fresh" baked potato. Also the slaw is not good. Fried catfish was not crispy after we requested crispy and well done. Large cold boiled shrimp had no taste. Too bad because we have been frequent diners there since they opened. And for sure we have no desire to return to a restaurant where you have to ask for a "fresh" baked potato.
We Drove to Wilmington Wife and I gave up the other day. We drove to Wilmington. Ever since Lane's closed is their any place in Johnston County that does not think seafood=fried
Have to concur with HG.. Holt Lake Bar-B-Que & Seafood 3506 US Highway 301 S (919) 934-0148 Used to have "all you can eat shrimp" on Tues. nights.
Spot On That is exactly where we ate(wish we could have something like that around here). My wife loves their Chowder and I have never ordered anything that was not great. I am not familiar with the Carolina Bucket?
Have to disagree about Holt's Lake...of course I shouldn't expect great seafood from a BBQ joint I don't suppose. Barbee's in Smithfield is great if you want fried seafood, some of the best I've had. Mayflower on Capital Blvd, went there about a month ago and it was so much different from the last time I was there a couple of years ago. Order was messed up and the food was lukewarm Oh how I miss Lanes!!!
There is a Mayflower in Garner now too... and so far the food has been hot and pretty tasty. And with Captain Stanley's a mile down the road you have 2 options.. Of course nothing beats taking a trip to WIlmington for an 1 hr 15 mins drive and eat seafood there!
Now see, we tried Lanes several times and were never impressed. To each his own I guess. I miss Kro's Nest, as far as seafood places around here go. At least you could get some good shrimp that weren't fried.
I miss Kro's Nest as well. We didn't go often because it was a little pricey, but when we did go...yum!
To the best of my understanding the Mayflower in Garner is not the same as the Mayflower in Raleigh. The one in Garner is not actually Mayflower it has something else that follows the name. Didn't want anyone here to go there and try to compare to Raleigh, because there is not really a comparison. Two completly seperate establishments.
Mayflower in Garner and Neptunes in Smithfield are owned by the same folks. At least that's my understanding.......................
seafood I like 42nd Street Oyster Bar in Raleigh. They have good food and not all deep fried. They are one of the few places that have steamed crab legs.
