http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=triangle&id=5072940 Seems some people are complaining about the smell of naturally deteriorating inert matter (atleast according to the blog space on the wral site.) Craig
I'm telling you, it was pretty strong this morning! I thought it was fog at my house..........................................
They (I don't know who 'they' are) were burning something this morning in/near Archer Lodge. There were road signs up warning of smoke and low visability.
duh. nevermind. I just saw this = "The fire broke out at the stump dump in the Loop Road vicinity" http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1216188/
Its right up the road from the Riverwood Golf Course. If you continue on Loop Rd. heading toward Archer Lodge, its on the right, just behind a small storage facility, maybe 1/2 mi past the golf course entrance.
The smoke was very bad on 42 East and downriver from Riverwood area. Including Neuse Colony and Glen Laurel. The Neuse Golf Club actually suspended play from about 8:00am to 8:45am. You could not see 20 feet in front of you. Fog came in and held the smoke down. It was a dangerous situation for drivers and individuals with breathing problems. May be more tomorrow morning if we have any fog.
The man that owns this is a cousin of my husband. First of all they never had any problems until the government came in and said all the stumps had to be covered in dirt by Feb. 1st. He always left it uncovered due to this. well people, He covered it up........now look. Larry Boyette is a very nice man.
You can also stay at clayton high school if you have breathing problems, etc....That is where the red cross is set up.
Nothing like getting a phone call at 12:00 to tell you they are voluntarily evacuating the area! (I stayed home!)
Yeah, i heard on the news this am that only 3 people showed up at the school, they had more workers there than people seeking shelter.
They didn't say WHY on the phone, just that it was a voluntary evacuation, so I figured "how bad could it be?" then I heard on the news this morning that carbon monoxide levels were elevated. All I know is, my house smells like smoke!
I called to talk to Mr Boyette and poor guy. His daughter Joy said he left for a while, couldnt take all the calls. Was getting very stressful for him. Everyone wants their carpet replaced and stuff like that. Being the state made him cover the stumps up, I think they should pay. Br boyette told them that the stumps should breath.
12:50am call! Our warning call came at 12:50am this morning. Scared us. We normally do not get call that late/early. But I am glad they have this warning system. When I answered I was half asleep and the lady's voice was rather low. So I asked her to speak up. Then I realized it was a prerecorded message. She did not respond! LOL
I'm not asking anyone to pay squat..................I'm probably a mile or so away. I didn't notice it too bad when I got home today.................but it's early yet.
Rotting wood emits methane gas; the state most likely requires them to cover it with dirt to keep the methane gas levels down to a minimum.
You would think that the state would have learned it's lesson a few years ago when the brush dump in Raleigh caught on fire after being covered over with dirt. Wheither or not it is to keep methane levels down, rotting wood creates methane as well as heat, which when covered over can be enough to cause spontaneous combustion (which is the case here and at the dump in Raleigh). Craig
They had to pay a big fine in Raleigh too. I just hope it hurries up and becomes clear. It stinks outside!
Exactly...you would think they would have learned about the covering with dirt and what can happen. But you know those ecologists.....god forbid we smell methane gas from rotting wood which in turn increases global warming. We would rather deal with a underground fire that is gonna burn for X number of days. And then possibly fine someone because they were made to bury the crap to start with. Craig
