I was leaving work last night from Sam's club on S. Saunders St. and as I was getting on the exit to get on 40 I noticed a man walking and he looked very drunk. He was walking up the exit towards 40 and all I thought to myself was that he was going to get hit. Watch the news at 11pm last night and sure enough they have shut down 40 by that exit cause a man was hit and killed on 40. I was so freaked out when I saw that, cause I saw him walking before it happend. Wonder to myself if there should have been something I should have done..he was drunk or seemed that way cause of the way he was walking. I felt so bad. Anyone hear anything else about this? Rush
Yup...saw it on the news...On the other discussion about the police officer chasing the guy on I40 at Hammond I mentioned that a man was weaving in and out of the first two lanes very obviously drunk one afternoon just before 5pm. I almost hit him. I called 911 on my cell and watched the news that night. I just knew he was going to get hit the way he was walking around. It was that same exit...it may have been the same guy. :-( Like I said on the other thread...Unless I absolutely NEED to take that exit I stay in the far lanes away from the exit ramp from now on. Scared me to death!
Man hit I was just thinking though at least I could have called, maybe he would still be alive...at that time I was just thinking got out of work late and want to go home. I could go another way home, but it takes longer..but it just seems lately people are on the highway that don't need to be. I can't think how the person who hit this guy feels, or the family that lost him as well. I haven't seen nothing else on it though. Rush
nah, you can't do that to yourself. Even if you had of called he likely would have been hit before the cops got there. Especially if he was already walking up the ramp. Please don't take my post as a put down. You actually never know...the guy that got hit may not even be the same man you saw. That area has a lot of beggars that hang out day and night. I don't like that exit. It really makes you uncomfortable/uneasy to drive up on them. I've never given money...cause booze and drugs is what they might end up with. But I have given my lunch before. Take care!
Could've, should've would've... hindsight is 20/20. Don't beat yourself up Rush, there is no way you could have known the future and probably nothing you could have done to help him. (Would you have been endangering your life by trying to help him? Would police have gotten to him soon enough if you had called for help?) I don't mean this to sound harsh, but that man shouldn't have been walking around traffic while drunk. Not only was he endangering his life, but he could have killed innocent motorists. Unfortunately, he was playing a form of drunk Russian Roulette and he found the bullet. :-(
Yeah, you never know it was the same guy. A lot of bums walk down Saunders and the train tracks that run parallel to the street. There's a bunch of bums that live back in the woods on the SW corner of Tryon and Saunders.
I was driving in Durham on I 85 south near the exit for Northgate Mall. I guy was pushing a baby in a stroller across the highway. I saw the baby, so I know it was not empty. I moved to the right as he was in the "fast lane" trying to lift the stroller over the concrete median, so he could get over to the north bound lanes, adn I guess get to the mall. Nice father figure. I saw him in my rear view running across 3 lanes of interstate last i looked.
Well the time they said he got hit is the is with in minutes of me going up the ramp..I believe that it was the same guy. On the news at 11 they said a hour ago which would have made the exact time I was there..Yeah I know I should say what if..it's to late now. Like I said, I work at Sam's and really I don't see beggers around that area, but the bus picks up at 4 different stops by Sam's. But, Hammon Street the next exit up, yes I have heard of beggers up there. Rush
I'm bad with a "direction", but if SW is the corner that was the old Raleigh Municipal Airport (behind the pretty much abandoned shopping center), that land is ALL cleared out for a new $$$ (high dollar) housing development. It's clear just about back to the RGA (Raleigh Golf course) on Tryon Rd.
They had moved to Junction Blvd which runs between Tryon Rd and Garner Town Sq Blvd (?) (the road that goes between the Belk and the Wal Mart). We had to move them again, once we started a construction project in those woods. They moved on down towards the Wal Mart, but still in the woods. There are about 15-20 guys and one girl living in there, with a handful of dogs.
