Not only that, but they (Wake County) voted in a billion doller bond not six months ago.

Of course the answer is right in the article you posted...

It is needed because all they need to have the best schools in America is MORE MONEY! (sarcasm injected)

Its needed because just last week I heard a news-blip that they were looking into using part of the "education lottery" for "other stuff".

You had to know they just weren't going to be able to keep their hands out of that cookie jar!

It seems they should have spent more on math and reading comprehension education in the past. If you take how much which is made on the lottery and how much is budgeted in the state for education you see there is a huge difference. The counties, such as Wake, which are growing so fast have to spend more to keep up. Also, the money spent on education from the lottery was never promoted as covering all future costs of education, but that seems to have been lost in the race to use the political spin opportunity.

Yep, I know what you mean Tassy, my original post was full of sarcasm.

Maybe I should have used the "Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)" smilie  instead of the plain old "Rolling Eyes" smilie  but to me  looks more like "hand caught in cookie jar" or "who me?" instead of a "dripping with sarcasm" smilie like I really needed. :-D

I like the lottery, and play every week. I also don't want them to take it away.

    But...

    I TOLD YOU SO!!!

But how is the money being squandered? Isn't it being spent on education? Just no way is an education lottery going to cover all the expenses for a massive education budget.

It was never supposed to cover all the expenses for the education budget. The enabling legislation clearly states that lottery proceeds are in addition to, not a substitute for, funds budgeted for education from other sources.

Lottery ticket sales have been lower than anticipated. Proceeds are divided roughly 3 ways - for prizes; for administration of the program; and for education. Some in the legislature want to increase the percentage to be paid out in prizes, in the belief that bigger prizes will increase ticket sales, resulting in more money for education.
