I just received a bill from the State, charging me taxes for automobile, tags, etc. Did you get one also? I'm new to NC and I'm not familiar with that kind of taxes. Is it only once a year fee or what? Please explain - thanks.

Yes, it is once a year. The tax and tags are paid separately. You pay for the tags when you register, and each year when you renew the registration; then you get a separate bill for the tax each year. The tax is based on the value of the vehicle and the county & city tax rates; it should go down a little each year. You pay the tax to the county, but if you don't pay it, the state blocks your registration.

Thanks! I'm releived to hear that we only need to pay once a year. My hubby thought we have to pay 3 times a year!

AND if your car/truck whatever has SUPER High Mileage you can get the tax rate lowered. Both of ours are very high in miles for their year and we get a tax break for that. (Wooo Hoooo! Saving Money!!) You have to call or go to the JoCo tax office in S'field to get this deal. I took a digi print of the odo as proof but they did not ask to see it.
    YEAH!!!

Why then do they tax me on my 22 year old pop up camper? It's only $9 a year, but come on.

You may also write it off when filing taxes next year.

Welcome to the great state of NC where you pay taxes on everything. I just got mine for the new vette I bought and almost passed out.

Wow! Did you question them about that? I believe they use NADA book value, which I don't think is very accurate, but it shouldn't be that far off.

They probably assumed that it was a restored antique.
My 2000 VW Bug is valued by JC this year for $7.6K and we are going to try and get that lowered.

WOW, THANK YOU!!! I just got off the phone with them (919-989-5130) and as soon as you get your vehicle tax bill, call them up with the mileage and they can adjust the tax for you! On the car, truck AND van we could have saved over 20%. You only have a 45 day window to call in, SO... AS SOON AS YOU GET YOUR BILL, CALL THEM!!!!

Thanks K for your call today and the information!!! You ROCK!!!

Also be sure to tell the JoCo Tax office is your car/truck/van/unicycle has ever been wrecked, totalled or not. They -might- lower you TAX BILL with that info too.
