I remember when I was in kindergarten class, just returned to class after I had chicken pox, there was a boy who teased me about my chicken pox scars. He said "Ha-ha! You got chicken pox cause' you ate too many chickens and drank pops!" How could I forget that? It is silly, isn't?
The Today Show There is a segment coming up this morning on the Today show about the vaccine - pro's and con's, etc. Julie
My sons got it quite a few years ago., It was not mandatory when they got them, it was an option. I guess there are some kids that are filtering through since it was not required until 2001. I remember having the pox, and it sucked.
My oldest had them at 5 and in turn my 10 month old contracted them from him. Ironically, all this occurred a week AFTER my 2 year old got the vaccine at her yearly check-up. So she never got them. If I had any idea, I would have just let her get them too and avoided the vaccine. From what I read now she'll need a booster because getting them as an adult is more dangerous than getting them as a kid.
From what I read now she'll need a booster because getting them as an adult is more dangerous When do they get that? I had no clue about this. hummm.
Is it just me, or does anyone else recall that back in the day, when one kid in a class got chicken pox, parents would find a way to get a bunch of kids together so we caould all catch it, and be done with it? This was waaaaay long before any vaccine for it.
No, but my two oldest got it after going to the Circus and I heard later that many children get it after going there. Funny thing is, I don't remember seeing any chickens at the Circus. :?
I had a rooster that attacked me when I was a little boy and ...no lie...soon I developed chicken pox. What would be the odds?
My lil girl had chicken pox back in January and it wasn't too bad (because she had the shot). 2 weeks later...I heard that a lady from her church school developed the shingles which the adults over 50+ would get if they come in contact with a child with chicken pox. It would last 6-8 weeks. I felt so bad when I heard this. But at the time she went to church school, she didn't have the pox until 2 days later.
Don't feel badly as the two are not connected. The woman from church had already had Chicken Pox at some time in her life and the natural reoccurance is Shingles. http://www.shinglesinfo.com/what-is-shingles.html What Causes Shingles? Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you've had chickenpox (over 90% of US adults have), the virus remains in your body and can cause Shingles. The chickenpox virus stays inactive in certain nerves. If the virus becomes active again, usually later in life, it causes the painful disease called Shingles. How Do You Get Shingles? You are at risk for getting Shingles if you have had chickenpox. In addition: Conditions that weaken the body's immune (defense) system, such as aging, cancer, or certain drugs, increase the chance that the virus will become active again, resulting in Shingles. You should know that there is no way to predict who will get Shingles, or when. About half of the nearly 1 million Shingles cases in the United States each year occur in people aged 60 years and older. 1 out of 2 people living to age 85 will have Shingles. The older you get, the longer the Shingles rash may last
Huh...interesting. She sure made me felt bad because no one had informed her of some child having chicken pox which I did my part by telling the teacher and I called every child's parents. She was upset because no one had informed her until she got sick with the shingles. The doctor did ask her if she came in contact with any child with chicken pox so at the time she didn't know, so she said no. One thing I have noticed around here is that they feel a need to blame someone for their sickness...come off it. Kids will be kids...they get sick.
My mother had Shingles, and omg it is horrible! She was SO out of it and sick! It was freaky. I had to bring her to the ER, it was awful.
