I cannot picture where Cornwallis crosses I-40 except closer to White Oak but I think it is White Oak Rd. there. Could they be referring to Cleveland and I-40 ... near West View? There was talk of an interchange there in the past.
Cornwallis Interchange I think this interchange would be where Cornwallis crosses over I-40 east of Cleveland Rd., near where it intersects Old Drug Store Road. This is much needed, of course it might not be if we had our own planning department to control the growth in the area better, rather than relying on someone sitting in Smithfield. No offense, but this area should have been incorporated a long time ago.
Ok, that's all messed up. Had to look at a map to see what they were talking about- talk about leaving out some details!!! The Google map I looked at is screwy as well- I'm pretty sure that road is called Cornwallis Rd up to 42 (at Thurman's), then changes to White Oak Rd somewhere up near New Bethel Rd (where the 70 bypass bridge is being built) and then stays White Oak Rd all the way up to 70 at White Oak (duh) shopping center. But Google maps has it labelled White Oak Rd south of 42- where all the cows are, and then it goes to Cornwallis Rd farther south, near Keri dr and north above New Bethel- like White Oak is just a short section of Cornwallis- which I KNOW is not right. Then the map shows the road changing names AGAIN back to White Oak Rd down near Cleveland Rd, then back to Cornwallis Rd, then back to White Oak Rd. (all of this as you drive south from Wake County towards Cleveland) One could only hope this was a plot to keep out further development, right?? Cornwallis changes to White Oak at the Wake County line. This intersection would be between 42 and 210, probably around mile 315 or so. But they don't have any money to build it, so it's years in the future.
Send this article and this thread to your wonderful commisioners who see fit not to control growth with any forceful measures at all until the county can catch up! It is easy to do... http://www.co.johnston.nc.us/mainpage.cfm?category_level_id=403
An exit at Cornwallis Rd would help alleviate traffic congestion at 40/42 a little bit, but once traffic exits onto Cornwallis, where does it go? There are just tiny two-lane roads all around there, so of course the next step would be widening much of Cornwallis. Nobody will ever be able to turn left out of those schools, with all the traffic going from I-40 to Cleveland Rd via Cornwallis...
ummm...I thought this was already planned and mapped out. Could have *sworn* I saw a map about 2 1/2 years ago...lin, am I wrong?? Frogger
I found an article by The Herald (Smithfield? Clayton?) that has a lot more detail than the NBC17 article. The link has been deleted/moved, but I read it through Google's cache here. DOT wants to start acquiring land by 2011 for the interchange. It will act as a relief for construction while they convert the I-40/NC42 interchange to a SPUI (think I-40 at Southpoint Mall in Durham, or I-540 and Six Forks Rd). They don't currently have money for either project, however.
Good Work 8) So it will be where Cornwallis/White Oaks crosses I40 closer to White Oaks Shopping center.
Actually, I think it's the other direction on I-40. That would be the same location EngNCSU and Kaci and I all mentioned earlier. It's a little confusing when they use compass directions that don't match the highway directions, but if you are travelling East on I-40 at this point, you are actually headed in a southerly direction.
May be I am just misunderstanding, but isn't the intersection you are talking about this one: Highlights are not mine
Hught - I believe that location is near where West View Elem. There was talk about a shopping area and movie theater going in there ... or very close by.
