So my Grandmother is about to turn 75, we are having a huge suprise party for her in a couple weeks, but I am really struggling to think of a good gift. She doesn't NEED anything and pretty much has everything she wants. I want it to be something special, not just the usual. Have any of you got any ideas? Thanks!! :-D
I don't know if this will help since I think your grandmother lives near by, but for my kids' grandparents that live out-of-state (well, that's ALL of them! lol), I give them gifts that involve pics of the kids and family. One year I made one set of grandparents a memory book with pics of the kids through out the year.
Make a donation in her name to her favorite charity, or to her church (if she's a member somewhere...) Or as the other post suggested, make something with family pictures. A lot of online sites have where you can upload (& scan) pictures and make books etc. I use Kodak.
Thanks MP, my Grandmother lives out of state too A friend at work did an amazing collage in Photo-shop with pictures of her Grandmother through the years, I'd love to do that too, but I don't think I have time, maybe by Christmas though. I've been trying to think of something with my son's photos, wish I had taken up scrap booking!
Gifts Several years ago, my aunt and uncle gave my Grandmother a "quilt." Each square had a picture of her 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren printed on the fabric (Now she has 22 great-grandchildren who are on pillows on the couch). The sewing of the ribbons separating the pictures is the only quilted part on the top of the quilt. It had tabs on the top and it hangs proudly in her living room. (She will turn 96 this year.) My husband's grandmother had three couch pillow we made with a picture of each great-grandchild on them. She loved to "hug" her "babies" even when they were 9 hours away from her.
I thought of the photo quilt idea too. Look, you can get that or other such things (like photo pillows, etc.) through Wal*Mart - and it only takes 7 to 10 days. Pretty nifty! http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2403891
I really like the "donation" in her name idea. This probably sounds INSANE, but, my brother bought goats (through sponsorship) for a village in South America in my parent's names. I thought they were going to be like "oh...ok...that's niiiiiiiice", but it ended up being very meaningful. Sometimes you can sponsor the purchase of a milk cow, chickens etc to be given to impoverished areas. I'm sorry but I'm not sure who he did this through. If interested, I can try to find out.
It's the Heifer Project - that's a wonderful organization! The man that started it was a dairy farmer from the midwest who was working on a relief project in Spain. He was giving cups of milk to starving children, and he realized, these people don't need a cup of milk - they need a cow! WWII broke out and he had to come home, but after the war, he and some other dairy farmers got together and got it started. Families receive animals, medicine, and training, and they agree to give the first offspring back to Heifer International, to help the project carry on.
When my grandmother turned 85, I wrote her a poem and had it put on a plaque for her. She will turn 90 in May and thinking about doing another one for her, if I can get the ole mind going.
That's a very interesting idea, she actually owned a rather large dairy farm up until a few years ago........................hmmmmmmmm! Thanks for all the great ideas guys!!
