I would hazard a guess that you are not a member of the ACLU. As abhorrent as it may be to most, burning a flag is protected speech, under the 1st amendment. I've always maintained that doing so in a public place is protected speech. However, he who would do so on my own private property does so at his own risk.
H6, i know i should know this but what is the correct way to dispose of a Flag? i am still holding onto 2 that have worn out and needed replacement but i cannot for the life of me remember the correct way (Blaming it on the CRS disease)
We should pass a law that prevents people in other countries from burning a US flag. We could use the military as the police force. How many countries can we invade at one time again?
Per the usa-flag-site.org "American Legion Posts and local governments often have facilities to dispose of unserviceable flags." While that statement is true, it's also true that they often have neither the facilities nor the knowledge. Furthermore, many municipalities have contacted USA Flag Site for what they should do with unserviceable flags. The only definitive answer is found in the US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning" *******
True, but the "fed up of turnign the other cheek" comment indicated there was more on their mind than just denouncing the action. Neither action nor the codemnation of the action was denounced in the response.
I think the assumption of it being denounced is closer than any assumption you can make as to what is on the mind of someone without them directly posting it.
Other than just the observation of the original poster not being a member of the ACLU? There does not have to be any other motive.
Disposing of flags properly.... Not sure if they still do it, but when I was a kid, we used to take ours to the local VA post or Legion and they would happily dispose of them. They always told me a bunch of veterans holding a ceremony would burn them with honors. As a gullible child, I believed thats what they did with them (picturing men in full dress uniform, playing taps, etc.) but I have a funny feeling now that I am an adult they would just toss them in a barrel and throw a match in them and go back inside for a beer
Dare, Anytime I have observed a flag disposal, it has always been performed respectfully. As a veteran, I had tremendous issues with what I saw as the stereotypical behaviors of vets organization...bunch of war story sharing, beer swilling, chain smoking yahoos....until I looked deeper and realized that what I observed was such a minute display of what vets organizations do, day in and day out for no pay, helping veterans. At that time, I conveniently didn't see the millions of hours that vets organizations volunteered at hospitals, both VA and civilian, the millions of dollars these folks raised for chairtable events, although they realistically could have used that coin for themselves, and a host of other great and noble works they do for their brothers and sisters in arms. I am actually a member of two veterans organizations. I will not name them, as I feel that all vets groups are worthy. They are often the only voice that a veteran has, and usually the only helping hand that a vet can find. Off topic, I know, but as Memorial Day approaches, I wanted to thank my brothers and sisters in arms for the priveldge of serving with them, even and especially Stinger... Carl

I don't even like when the flag is used for clothing. A flag on your back pocket means you are sitting on it. That to me is disrespectful. No flag undies either. It should be held with reverence.

disposal of the flag... I hope I did not offended you, that was not my intention, it was intended as humor.What I meant was as opposed to a huge dress funeral with the 21 gun salute, bugle playing taps, etc that I imagined, I now think it was considerable more subdued. We as little snot-nosed Cub Scouts were probably bugging them always taking flags over to be burnt. My father is a Vietnam vet and my father in-law a Korean war vet, who volunteers at the Legion in Boston every day. Those orginazations such as the Legion, VFW, etc are a tremendous part of the communities that I always grew up in. I hold them in the highest regard. As far as beer swilling, I believe it was Ben Franklin that said "Beer is proof that God loves us." Its good to know they still provide the proper disposal service @ these type of places. Maybe I'll see you @ the Post sometime and I can buy you a round.
