The McGee's Crossroads Middle School Art Club is sponsoring the First Annual Student Art Sale and Creative Yard Sale on Saturday, May 5th from 8am to 12pm (Rain Date: May 12th). The purpose is to raise funds for a guest artist visit by Asian Calligrapher Alice Jinxiu Zhao and to purchase art supplies for Mr. Blanco's school in Costa Rica. The yard sale location will be in the front parking lot spaces. Parking will be in the bus lot and at the Elementary School. Cost of a single space will be $10. Unloading will take place between 7am - 8am. Please bring your own tables & chairs. Bathrooms across from Media Center will be available. All money will be collected by adults; students may help, but not sell. No alcohol or firearms may be sold, but baked goods are fine. The Art Club will gladly accept donations. Non-clothing items will be collected Friday, May 4th from 2:45 - 6pm in the Media Center. Please contact art teacher Charlene Bowling at charlenebowling@johnston.k12.nc.us if you wish to purchase a spot or donate items. Thank you.
Why wouldn't the money be for Mcgee's Art class supplies and such? I think I need more explanation because just from this it sounds like this Asian lady is coming here to take your money and then y'all send the rest to Costa Rico. :?
Clarification Please be aware that this is a JCS approved fundraiser. Art supplies are covered by JCS instructional funds. Guest artists are not, even though some are sponsored through the Artists in the Schools program. Ms. Zhao worked with art students last year through a grant from the Nasher Museum at Duke. She is an excellent calligrapher and teacher, and the students gain so much from having the opportunity to learn from her. Grant funds are not available to sponsor another visit this year. However, we are fortunate that Ms. Zhao will do a one or two day guest artist residence with us for a fraction of the fee usually charged by other guest artists. In response to your second question, we have had an ESL/VIF teacher from Costa Rica at our school for three years. Last year a group from our school joined him in Costa Rica and visited several schools in his community. They noticed many needs and wanted to do something to support his home school. Provided that there are any funds remaining after the guest artist residency, we would like to purchase and send some art supplies back to Costa Rica with him this summer for his school.
I'm glad to see these students doing something like this. The Arts are not the highest priority when it comes to school funding!
