Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack On Kids Last Edited: Monday, 14 May 2007, 6:26 AM CDT Created: Monday, 14 May 2007, 6:26 AM CDT By The Associated Press MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables. The mock attack Thursday night was intended as a learning experience and lasted five minutes during the weeklong trip to a state park, said Scales Elementary School Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip. "We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation," he said. But parents of the sixth-grade students were outraged. "The children were in that room in the dark, begging for their lives, because they thought there was someone with a gun after them," said Brandy Cole, whose son went on the trip. Some parents said they were upset by the staff's poor judgment in light of the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech that left 33 students and professors dead, including the gunman. During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on locked door. After the lights went out, about 20 kids started to cry, 11-year-old Shay Naylor said. "I was like, 'Oh My God,' " she said. "At first I thought I was going to die. We flipped out." Principal Catherine Stephens declined to say whether the staff members involved would face disciplinary action, but said the situation "involved poor judgment."
Inexcuseable acts like this seem to go down towards the end of the school year. Loss of teacher license, criminal charges, and some heavy fines (to cover the amount of teacher raises the other good teachers in the district probably won't get now) should be in order for these poor representations of teachers.
Parents surely arent' teaching their kids about safety, so the teachers have to. For example.... I was in a neighborhood not too long ago, was leaving and saw 2 kids with BB guns, I like guns, so I waved at them. Well one of them hit my car with a BB. Can you even imagine how fast I turned around to beat their *****? So the one kid goes home, he didn't do it. The other I immediately ask where he lived and he pointed ... I go up to his front door and have a "conversation" with the dad. Turns out the kid was NOT supposed to have a gun (it was his friends) and the dad just blew it off, saying "What do you say to the lady", Kid says "I told her I was sorry". That just infurioated me and I began to explain to BOTH of them about gun safefy etc.. kids getting killed, kids getting their *** beat for having one and not supposed to etc... I know the kid didn't get into trouble, because the dad just didnt get it. I was hoping I did have some damage to the car after that, so they would have to pay for it, maybe then they'd learn a lesson! Stupid parents = stupid kids.
You said it exactly Harleygirl! Stupid parents=Stupid Kids:!: The teachers should have found another way to teach the kids about safety.
Sometimes the best thing to do is scare the bejesus out of them to ... #1. Pay attention to their surroundings #2. Learn about things that can kill them #3. Find an adult if they are in trouble #4. If the **** hits the fan, be calm and get OUT of the situation as fast as possible #5. Don't try to be a hero It's kinda like "don't touch the stove because it's HOT!!!!" You want them to know of things that can hurt them and for them NOT to do it and get away or get out! That's HG's parenting lesson for today...stay tuned for tomorrow's lesson ............ Yes I was a daycare teacher a long time ago! 21- 5 year olds :?
I have to wonder that in the event it really does happen in the future would the kids think it was a joke or a drill again. Kinda' like the boy who cried wolf or Chicken Little senario. This was a poor way to prepare them for the real thing. And the saddest part of it is that I can actually picture this type of attack happening. There are those sickos out there who want the fame and hitting a pre-school, elementary, or middle school (something no one has done yet) would, in their sick minds, elevate them above the other sickos who prey on innocent children and people in general. All I know is that it scares me to send my two to school nowadays, to say nothing about the mall, skating rink, etc. where kids hang out. It's so sad our kids have to deal with the reality of a possible attack anywhere, any time.
HG if she had kids.... Scenario: Lowes Foods Candy Isle. Kid: mom can I have some candy?? HG: ______ NO!!! Kid: But Mom!! HG: I _______in said NO!!! Kid: SOb Sob HG: I - swak told - swak you - swak NO!! SWAK SWAK SWAK
Dern, I have not been utilizing DS to his fullest potential! Just kidding for those of you with no sense of humor!
I can't take credit for this (my friend's dad) Dad (on the couch, to his two boys): Okay, okay, who wants to be a big boy and get daddy a beer? Huh, which one (really pumping up the two kids under the age of 6) Kids: Ooh, Ooh, Ooh! I do! I do! Arguing with each other: I said I could do it first. No, I said it first! Dad: Now, now, I've got a great idea. Both of you can get daddy a beer! Both kids gleefully run off to each get daddy a beer. That's why I'm having two.
To answer your question. I dont know what the heck is wrong with people these days. What were they thinking? ugh.
