Thanks everyone for your posts. Right now her light bill is okay and the food is holding up. The main concern is the rent. I have made some calls but to no avail as of yet. Hopefully something will come available.
Faye, I will be contacting you in the near future. thanks

She does no have a phone. She uses my cell after work, then everything is closed. I use my cell for work and can not leave it with her all day.

You need to let HER figure it all out. There are pay phones and stuff. If she really wanted it.

You may be doing her an injustice.

    Just think about it.

I know it seems hard to do..........Just think we all made it somehow.

    She has to....

Look on the ground, have you ever seen baby bird bones there. when they got pushed out of the nest on their own, they flew.

I can see helping but only to a certain extent. Dont you think?

    Maybe I am wrong.......

Wow, i guess compassion is just not available on this board today. As the mother of grown children you will help when they are in dire straits as much as you can especially if there are children involved. It is a natural thing.

    I completely agree with T4T.

I have an older sister who was helped first by my mother then grandmother. She's 9 yrs older than me and STILL doesn't know how to manage money. After Grandmother died, I took the task on. About 2 years ago I said enough is enough and quit helping. She's facing losing her house and I WILL NOT step up. She has to fend for herself.

Helping your adult daughter can be way more harm than good. She needs to do all the things you are doing..for herself. She needs to learn how to fend for herself...and, yes, I would do that with my own child, having lived thru it with my sister.

Froggie, if you notice, i did say dire straits. i am a firm believer in tough love but i also know that sometimes people do get in circumstances where they honestly need help and i don't know of any mother who can turn her back. Big difference in carrying someone and helping someone when needed.

^^^I know, I know, Kaci. Helping out in dire straits is one thing. Continuing to help out after 6 months, a year, 5 years...then the person has become co-dependent on you and won't/can't do things for themselves that they need to do to survive.

You're right, Frogger, it can get to be a lifestyle, and that doesn't help anyone. But in this case, the OP suggests it has only been a couple of months.
A lot of people are only one or two paychecks away from serious trouble. The young lady is fortunate to have her mother to help her out, and I hope she gets back on her feet soon. Maybe she'll be able to return the favor someday.

Trust me, Pat, I am intimately familiar with the one-paycheck-from-disaster scenario. Sudden life changes can put you there ;) . There's a lot of middle-of-the-night stress wondering where the rent's coming from, if you'll have lights tomorrow, be able to take a shower tomorrow or will you wake up to no water? I know that feeling well.

I'm not trying to be a crab. It's just a little reminder that, after awhile, if an adult kid doesn't make the effort to take care of themselves, you're heading towards trouble. I wish mom & daughter a lot of luck in this situation!

Yup, I'm sure we're on the same page here, Frogger, I didn't mean what I was saying to come across as negative. I think we both agree: short-term help=good; long-term help=not so much.

    Take care!
