What age do you think is ok for a child to have a myspace account? With or with out the private block. My child is not old enough to even know what this is yet I dont think she knows anyways never mentioned it but we were discussing this at work and someone has a 11 year old girl with her own account know blocks and her pics are on it and pics of her friends and the parent thinks its ok and safe. I think its crazy but have been told I'm over protective of my child by everyone I know lol.

Jen brought this up awhile ago and there was a lot of talk about it. I can't locate the thread at the moment...

There's been a lot of talk on the radio yesterday and today about some kind of parental permission required for these sites, or that someone's trying to make that happen. Does anyone have any more info on that?

I let my 13 yo get a blocked one. She has to know someone before she can add them and they can see her page. I would not have allowed it if I didn't control the computer and her time on it. I have my computer password protected and they only time my children can get on it is if I go unlock it for them (so they are never on it unless I'm at home and then it's very limited). I also have my daughter password, etc. and go on it daily and check emails, etc. to ensure what she see's is suitable for her. I have even blocked some of her friends who used vulger language and told their parents about it.

she does have picture of her and her friends, etc. I know no one can view it unless she gives them permission to do so. Nothing is safe on the pc with a good hacker, no online banking, etc.

My 9 yo uses her gaggle accout that her school set up for her to email her friends. She isn't allowed on myspace until she's 13 and then the same conditions as her sister. If they don't like the fact I'm controlling things, they don't get one, or get on the computer at all :)

Yes you can have a private account and they only way people can view your page is if you approve them to. That's the way my daughter has it set up.

Mine is like that too. Even though an acct. is private, if someone stumbles upon it they can see your profile pic, name and location.

I think 15 is an alright age, IF the parents watch their kids. I have one but my 8 and 10 year old will NOT be getting one until there teens. My 10 year old wanted one cause "all" his friends do. I don't think so. There are too many crazy people out there who know how to sweet talk kids into doing anything. I wonder how they plan on controlling these accounts and will the kids be punished if they post a myspace account without their parents permission.

Myspace rules state you should be 14 to have a myspace account. My 11 year old has friends that have myspace accounts. She does not.

I did find matmice.com though, which is just for kids 19 and under and she does have a matmice page. Her profile is private and you have to approve everyone. I still wont let her post a pic online though.

I've got a public page, and I haven't had too many bad experiences with it. I get invites from what I call "porn queens" they try to lead you to porn sites. I always deny their invites. On the plus side, I've found some very talented people that are putting out some great music that is largely going unheard. It's a great place for young artist to get their music out their. However, do to things like internet preditors, I'd keep kids off any of these on line sites until they're 16, unless parents have complete control and/or final say over the site.

Wake County libraries are now blocking myspace from their computers. A sign said this was due to illegal drug activity and people accessing adult content sites. Good to see the library take a stand to protect children!

Well it is my humble opinion that if you allow your kids to participate in myspace after all of the horror stories that have come to surface, then you will have no shoulder from me with pity.
