ok, i have to agree with you there. but also keep in mind all the lead in a CFL bulb. many more times the amount in a standard bulb. plus a CFL bulb does not light up instantly, it takes a second or 2, yet another reason i dont like them. dont get me wrong, i bought a 2 pack a while ago and i have them in a bathroom and the laundry room. the thing i hate about them is they dont instantly light when i flip the switch. now if someone could invent an LED light that would give off as much light as a standard bulb i might pay for that. buy one and its good for just about forever.

i just saw your post and responded. now that there is a link i will go check it out and see if home LED lighting is worth a crap.

edit: wow, i knew i should of bought stock in cree several years ago, i would be rich by now. they are proud of the LEDs

Sometimes you may have to be incovenienced to make the world a better place. Hence, "An Inconvenient Truth." However, everyone does not have to make HUGE changes, just small changes. Small changes from everyone adds up to a HUGE difference. In my house I do the following:

-recycle everything I can, ESPECIALLY plastic grocery bags. They take 100 years (I think, or it may be 1,000) to decompose.

-compost vegetable and paper products for my garden

-try not to overuse paper products

-give things to Goodwill rather than throwing them away

-drive a car that gets 40+ miles per gallon

-try to eat fresh foods, rather than double packaged processed foods

-have changed SOME of my lightbulbs, not all.

-Have signed up to stop junkmail

Recycling and composting is easy for everyone, and saves A LOT of trash! Polar Bears are dying, bees are disappearing. Albert Einstein said that when bees disappear, the human race has only 4 years left to survive. Scientists have not been able to invent a way to pollinate without bees. These things seem to happening because of global warming, which is caused by us not wanting to be "inconvenienced." Think about it- -everything you throw away isn't "away." It goes to the ground and takes up space for a very long time. If you really think about that statement, it may stop you from throwing as much away.

Loriana, great post, forgot about the junk mail stuff.

The Einstein quote is an urban legend.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but that is totally unsubstantiated. Go here and check out the truth as he has spent considerable time proving that Albert Einstein never made such a comment.

Bees are a common commercial pollinator for many crops but not the sole source of pollination for plants. Flies are actually an important pollinator.

The imported honeybees are excellent pollinators because they will take nectar from a wide variety of plants, but there are literally thousands of varieties of native bees, butterflies, and other insects that also pollinate plants.

It is actually mercury, not lead. All fluorescent lights contain trace amounts of mercury. But don't worry — there is far less mercury in CFs than in thermometers or old thermostats. Plus, using these bulbs helps
prevent mercury from being released into the air from coal-powered power plants. When they burn out years down the road, recycle them.

As for waiting for them to light up, how important are we that we can't wait 2 seconds for a light bulb to warm up. I am pretty convinced that the initial light from the bulb will provide enough illumination for you to accomplish what you need. That's a pretty lame excuse and makes you sound lazy. Like I said, convenience is a dirty word.

Someone mentioned buying fesh food instead of twice package processed stuff. You can take this one step further: when you buy produce, skip the little plastic bag for the larger items. They will bag them at the checkout anyway.

You might be interested in a couple of bills in the state legislature right now. One is REPS, the renewable energy portfolio standard, that requires over time a certain amount of power generation come from renewable sources. I think it's 10% in the House bill and 20% in the Senate bill, or vice versa. Both bills would allow energy conservation measures to count toward that requirement.

Another bill bans the sale of most incandescent light bulbs in the state, beginning 1/1/2016. That gives the industry over 8 years to come up with acceptable alternatives, and I would certainly expect LED's to be among those alternatives. That bill includes exceptions for certain special purpose light bulbs, including appliance lights, bug lights, black light, and others. I do believe, with that kind of motivation, business will come up with better alternatives than anything we have now, and I expect the prices will come down when the market allows for more mass production methods, with the economies of scale that come with that.

oh my god, not the global warming crap, go buy some carbon credits, im sure al gore will help you on that....

mercury...lead... either one im sure a CF bulb as more then a standard bulb. and what do most people do with a burned out bulb whether it be standard or CF? toss it into the trash. also when i flip a switch i want light, i dont want to wait, say its an excuse and call me lazy i dont care. i want light when i flip the switch, and i get it with standard bulbs.

i want my groceries in a plastic bag, when i am done with the plastic bag i throw it away. how about going after the manufacturer's of the plastic bags and tell them to make them biodegradable.

we need more nuclear power plants, but people will Enlightened person about the nukes. nevermind the fact that they produce alot more power than a coal plant with less pollution. the spent fuel rods..im sure we will come up with something in the future to do with them.

i recycle what i can. when i make a trip to the landfill i put cardboard where it goes, tires, batteries, etc. but most things, just like everyone else, ends up in the trash.

Yea, most scientist believe that global warming is just 'crap' as you put it. They don't even bother making recommendations to world leaders because it is just a waste of time.

If we could bottle up ignorance and generate power from it, WS would be a source of renewable energy.

You were wrong about the price of CFL's.
You were wrong about the mercury.
You can receylce them at the same place you recycle old thermostats.
If you flip on a CFL you do get light right away and the warming period might be 5 seconds at most.
Carbon credits allow you to support renewable, green energy in other areas when it is not available to you and is tax deductible.

    Take some responsiblity.

upon further looking at sams club, bj's, ect. websites...yes i was

wrong yes, but you know what i was talking about.

true, but who will take the time to drive at 3.00+gallon to recycle a light bulb? my bet is that 99% will end up in the landfill

the ones i have after i flip the switch it takes a few seconds to light up, it blinks a few times then lights up. maybe i got a bad light, dont know. but i do know it does not give instant light like a standard bulb.

cool, pay me and i will plant a tree in my yard.

    will do
