Finally EOG testing is OVER! I was told the school is supposed to call parents today before 7pm to notify the students on their failed EOG test. So far, no one has called here yet!! I'm still in a basketcase until 7pm or at least wait until we get the letter in the mail tomorrow or so. What about you?
I'm just glad they're over. I think they're a huge waste of time. If the county is going to require them then they need to provide the proctors they need to monitor the tests! My two always stress over them and why I'll never know because they always do exceptionally well on them. If my two stress over them, I feel really sorry for kids who do not perform well. Some people just do not test well, but that is no indication of what they've learned. Putting time limits on the tests only add to the pressure these kids already feel.
I understand that y'all hate president Bush and want to blame him for everything from a low hurricane season to the Hurricane's dismal year of Hockey, but get your facts straight first please. NCLB was passed in 2001 87-10 /381-41 with both a Republican and Democrat sponsor. It requires standards to be met. It did not provide any additional funds but they were asking schools to be accountable for the money they were already getting. NC has been doing standardized EOG tests for year long before NCLB.
yes, and NCLB is just a rewritten Secondary Education Act that has been around longer than 2001. However, Curious was stating that the county required them, and did not have enough monitors for the tests. Technically, the county does not require them, the nation does. The standards have gotten stricter since NCLB because of unfair goals that the schools have to meet. This puts extra pressure on teachers, which in turn, puts added pressure on students, which "stress" them out, as Curious had stated. Bush did in fact cut funds to schools, not NCLB, which does in fact take away money from schools, which then eliminates positions so that there is not enouh people to monitor the tests. Furthermore, assistants at Title I schools are now required to have a 2 year degree, which means help is hard to find. No one with a 2 year degree wants to work for that salary. Since all of these things happened during Bush's term in office, I do hold him and his cabinet responsible. It's not a democrat or republican thing, it's a Bush term thing.
Just got call from both of my West View teachers. Both kids got 4's on Reading and Math!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not going to get into the discussion about whether they're a waste of time or not. It's required. Just glad it's over and I can focus on 5th grade and High school graduation. Feeling a little nostalgic right now. I call it a "mom moment".
Not worried about them at all. If he flunks it, he can take it again. If he flunks it again, i can request a conference with his teacher and principal to let them know that my son does very badly on tests and is not any reflection on how well he knows his school work. That will get him passed to the next grade because afterall...if you hold Johnny back, his self esteem will suffer. For the record, my son got 4's. Never been worried about EOG's because they mean nothing. Any time you can flunk an end of the grade assessment that is supposed to determine if they pass or fail...and i can go whine to someone to get him passed.....these EOG's are meaningless.
At least the EOGs happen at the end of the grade (hence the name). Other states have the high-stakes testing in the middle of the year. My students took the 5th grade exam on the 100th day of school in Nevada. What a nightmare to explain to parents that their kids only got 50% and 60% and still get As on their report cards. With schools going year round here, I'm interested in how they'll report scores to the federal government in time. (I think scores have to be submitted in May regardless if students still have 3 more months of school left.)
Ditto here. Hopefully that is a good thing. My nephew said his teacher was calling those who didn't pass, my daughter just said that she wouldn't be able to attend thier party tomorrow if she didn't pass, didn't say how or when she would find out. They both go to McGee's Elem.
Exactly.....what a great educational system.....Oh maybe they need a couple more billion to improve it. Maybe one day the educational system will teach the students about the law of diminishing returns.
How sad it is that a child who struggles academically will be excluded!! That should do a lot for his/her self-esteem.
That is sad. She has been FREAKING out about it, she is SO worried about not passing the tests and not being able to attend the party. They are supposed to be celebrating that the EOGs are over, not wether or not they passed, at least that's what the notice sent home says. Oh wait, I just looked at it again and it says, "We will celebrate our perfect attendance for the EOG and it will be over!" So still that has nothing to do with if a kid passes or not.:?
What do you feel is unfair about expecting high standards from our education process? As a parent, I like the idea that schools and teachers are required to output quality education results. Teachers should be under pressure. They should feel the pressure of accountability. I feel pressure of accountability in my job. Sometimes I have deadlines to meet that stress me out...do you feel that's unfair for some reason? Same goes with Students. Life isn't easy. Jobs aren't all about socializing and fun. Learning and getting good grades isn't a day in the park. The sooner we teach kids that honest hard work is good for them, rather than to expect life handed to them on a plate...the better off everyone will be. What does having enough people to monitor tests have to do with the success of any one child on the EOGs? All a proctor - or monitor - does is watch to make sure no one is cheating. What is the salary? What is the career path for assistants? There are plenty of folks who apprentice for little salary...but they are gaining skills and experience that will bring them a bigger salary later. Anyone "assisting" our kids with their education needs to be well-eduated themselves. So...should we blame the downfall of education - lowering of standards, passing kids who have no business passing due to PC self-esteem concerns, etc...on Clinton since these issues first arose during his Presidency?
In 2002, 75% of the kids in Wake County Schools who failed the test on all 3 tries they were given....were passed to the next grade anyway. I remember 'bout falling out of my chair when I read that in the news.
Could it be that rather than exclusionary, the party is actually set up as a reward for those who worked extra hard and who, by passing, showed they made the efforts to study and do well on the test?!? There's nothing wrong with that.
Ok I usually just read and never have a whole lot to say but I have to vent here. My daughter who has always passed the EOG failed the Math by 2 points. I found out this afternoon. She has made the Honor Roll 1 nine weeks and missed it by 2 points in the same class the next 2 nine weeks. WHat worries me is whether she will pass or fail due to the EOG. The county has raised the standards on the Math this year to 80% instead of 50 or 60 % as the previous years which makes it harder to pass but by only missing by 2 points tells me she has improved quite a bit. She gets to retake the Math next week and I will pray that she passes or else I will be one of those nagging parents with their child who does deserve to pass because of the grades throughout the year.
What about the students who pass without putting in any real effort? should they be excluded then? or the ones who work really really hard with no parental support and fail by a few points? Should they be allowed to go by means of effort? I'm glad the party is just to celebrate it being over and not just for those who pass. Being excluded from a party this year won't do anything to help a kid pass next year.
