funny, this fiscal year's tax collections have been on a track to a 1.1 billion dollar surplus...i don't think the state is in a hole. the highway patrol's fuel budget may be 4 million dollars in the hole, though. i know they're cancelling extra troopers for holidays and overtime shifts due to fuel cost...heard everett clendenon say it on wptf a couple of weeks ago
Have you noticed all the Highway Patrol cars parked by the road with nobody in them? Way to slow people down without using a lot of gas!
One of the best ideas I've seen!! I went to Greensboro on Saturday and it seemed like every few miles I was checking my speed because of the "troopers" on the road. You're automatically going to do it I think when you see them there.
There were also more than a few along US70 towards Morehead City Sunday night. They do work for the passing through speeders but not much for the local daily drivers in that area.
But just when you feel confident that all the HP cars are empty, the next one will have a trooper in it!
On the way to church Sunday I saw 4 empty cars and one occupied one. The occupied one was not marked and had someone pulled over!
If the state is in a hole it probably is more than just gas prices and more to do with generous uncle Easley and the spendthrifts in the legislature. They never save a dollar when it can be spent (or given to Jim Hunt in an IHOP bathroom!)
Don't worry. That deficit will magically turn into a surplus just before the next election (only to revert back to a deficit after the votes are counted).
Well let me re-phrase what the HP rep said. She said they were 4 Million over budget in fuel costs. Any betta?
Quite possibly the only time I've ever defended Jim Hunt, but it was Jim BLACK that was conducting financial business in an IHOP bathroom. One of the problems with NC politics...too many Jims!! :-D
