Since long enough to be part of the definition in the dictionary. race 1 (rs) KEY NOUN: 1 A local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics. 2 A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the German race.
Want another opinion on this situation. It is fairly rough, but interesting to see what this shortage of workers means to one individual.
<sound of loud squeaky brakes> Wait a minute here. What article are you claiming that I disbelieve? I posted the damn article Wayne. Where have I said I disbelieve it?!?!? Now I KNOW you are arguing just to argue. Geesh...some of you liberals have gone farther over the edge than even I would have believed.
There are hispanics with green eyes, brown eyes and blue eyes. Some have black hair, some brown...and even some blonde. I've seen light-skinned hispanics and very dark-skinned hispanics. Same with Germans. Same with Irish. So as I asked before...how do you determine someone's race by their appearance?
I don't know how you can dispute the article so often without disbelief, but I am sure you can 'explain' it
You look for the racial characteristics. Yes, there are Hispanics that are not the 'typical' sterotype of the 'Mexican', but that is not what was stated.
Nice job, Magnolia. I laid out the bait, and you took it. There are Mexicans with green eyes and reddish hair because there is no such thing as a pure breed human. We all are a mix of races. That is one reason that racist attitudes make no sense. A "white" person who hates a "black" person isn't really white to begin with, so he should be hating himself for the same reason: he isn't white. Now, to get back to the real issue, which you so blatantly diverted attention from, bigotry against hispanics is bigotry. Expected them to live up to standards your ancestors didn't and calling what they're doing illegal when the exact same behavior was legal for you ancestors is bigotry. (I'm not talking about the driving but about being here trying to make abetter life for themselves, of course.)
Nice try, snuffy. People who tend to make false accusations of racism frequently try to back peddle out of them when they are called on it. You weren't "laying bait." You were trying that old standby that many of the intolerant ilk on the left use: "When you can't support your position, just call them a racist." I'm reminded of something I read a Liberal post the other night in another forum: "Even if it's a lie, we should spread it as far as we can." Those who call others "racist" when it has nothing to do with race, are the most racist and intolerant of all, and you've proven it.
Now I see what you're saying, Wayne...geesh...stop jumping around all over the place. You were harping on and on about the figures in the Carolina Journal article I posted...and now, oopteen pages away, you go back to referring to the original article. Okay...yes, I do disbelieve the original N&O article. The article insinuated that we need more immigrants to come in because there aren't enough. That is not true. There are plenty. The problem is that those immigrants that have come in are taking our middle-class jobs away from US citizens instead of working the agriculture jobs where they are needed. If you don't believe me, talk to the men who were in construction and landscaping and making decent money...but who now cannot get work for decent pay in those jobs because the illegals are now working in them. A friend of mine's husband is a 3rd generation brick mason. He used to never need to look for work, as several contractors were always setting him up with jobs. Now he's driving a truck and has to spend a good part of his time away from his family in order to support them, because he could no longer get the jobs for decent pay, as the contractors are able to get hispanics to lay bricks for much less than they used to pay him.
The focus never changed from the first post and the representation of the current situation. Your later article was far from current in the situation. No, it clearly stated there were not enough seasonal workers last fall and that the reform bill was hoped to correct that problem. There are plenty of citizens too, but not in the right area, etc. How about the employers who claim they cannot get anything but Hispanics to work? I know a couple in the construction/landscape industry that have trouble getting any but Hispanics and when they do have a harder time getting them to actually work. These would be anecdotal cases so no generalization can be accurately determined, except when you want to believe. That would be an anecdotal case as well.
They have and we have discussed relative wages, but I do not know what their current scale is. There is still the problem of lack of productivity at similar pay scales, which increases the overhead costs in total.
From Magnolia's first article: Officials at Smithfield Packing Co., the giant pork slaughterhouse in Bladen County, said they have experienced the phenomenon firsthand. In January, federal authorities raided the plant, resulting in the deportation of 21 employees and the firing of about 500 more whose Social Security numbers failed federal checks. Since then, the number of Hispanic applicants has dropped significantly, plant spokesman Dennis Pittman said. Pittman said the company is now short 100 workers, despite a starting salary of about $10 an hour -- far more than most unskilled factory work. A starting pay of ~$21,000.00 for unskilled labor does not seem to be a bad beginning to me. This would be comparable to the latest entry level wages for the majority of the construction industry. http://eslmi23.esc.state.nc.us/oeswage/
I see a round of inflation in our future, no matter what the Fed does. They have become highly skilled at managing the economy through control of the money supply, but if we have reached full employment, I'm not sure inflation can be avoided.
The problem may be more regional than national though. We are in an unusual area in comparison to the rest of the country.
the hidden income tax. We can not afford our current spending levels at any level of government. There will be a day of reckoning that will make the Great Depression sound tame.
