Related to my previous SunRocket post....

Our VOIP phone service provider is out of business.

    from today's New York Times
"Earlier this week, Internet phone carrier SunRocket Inc. abruptly shut down, leaving more than 200,000 customers scrambling for alternate service"

We've been wondering what's up as we've not had phone service most of the week. Wish they would have at least notified us they were closing!

Anyway ... we move forward ... and are researching other VOIP service companies and *low cost* cell phone plans (probably unlimited) as we consider whether we will continue with a land line. We won't have phone service until we find a replacement so welcome suggestions!

At least we have internet and e-mail :)

Does Vontage require you to lock into a contract for a specific period of time? How is the quality of the phone line?

I just check the vontage site and it says we can keep our current number (which has a Smithfield exchange).

I use Skype at times (mainly when I travel) and have had great service from them. $29.95/year for unlimited calls to US and Canada. Skype to Skype calls are free anywhere in the world. Their one quirk is that for people to call you, you have to also get a Skype-In number, for which they charge $60 /year. So, if you got the whole package, you get phone service like you are used to using for $90/year. Also nice that you can get multiple Skype-In numbers...so if you have someone you talk to a lot in another state, you can pick up a Skype-In number in their area. They call the local number instead of paying long distance.

There's all types of ways to attach to your Skype account...small black boxes that let you use any standard phone, phones made specifically for Skype....I've had good luck attaching to my laptop with a Bluetooth headset which Skype recognizes and links up with great. As for phones make specifically for Skype, this one is the best I have used: Linksys CIT200 Skype phone

Might also want to try QRO Wireless. (www.qrowireless.com) They are local and were offering QROVoice in the past.

True...unless they were to use one of the WiFi Skype phones. They work directly off the wireless Internet connection and don't require a PC to be present. But that is getting a little geeky....

I'll share the skype info. with my husband who is a computer geek and will understand it better. :)

We do have a wireless network for our laptops. Would skype work with that if our computers are turned off or must at least one computer be on all the time?

I learned today that Vontage is expected to file bankruptcy soon so I hesitate to sign up with them. Anyone have thoughts on the future of the company?
