Just wanted to say GOOD LUCK to both the 7-8 coach pitch All Stars and 9-10 All Stars on their State Championship tournaments this weekend!! And Congratulations to them on their District 5 Championships!! Go teams!!
The 7-8 coach pitch team is still in the state tournament. They won all three games yesterday. We are on our way back to Rocky Mount today to play at 1:30. These little guys played their hearts out yesterday!
Cleveland 7-8 coach pitch came in 2nd place in the state!!! These boys played great ball today! I was so proud of each and everyone of them! There were 127 teams total in the state and these guys came in 2nd place!! Way to go Cleveland!!! This coming up weekend the 9-10 year olds play in Hickory, good luck guys!!!
I helped coach the Garner 7-8 team and you should be proud of Cleveland. They had a very good team that was well coached. I can't say enough good things about Vic Smothers and the entire program. A class act!
Just curious - how are the All Star teams selected for Cleveland? Is it like most other All Star teams where each player gets to try out for the team and is selected by the All Star Coaches (who are selected by their team record)?
Players sign up for the league and play on a team. Coaches then nominate the better players from that age group that can commit and form the all-star team.
So honestly the best players are not always selected are they, considering most coaches have a kid or two on the team? (No i do not have any children on the team (my baby boy is 21) - just was very involved in leagues in VA and the All Star competitions - i have heard some negative things about Cleveland's favoritism when it comes to selecting All Star teams). Just hoping to get some answers that i can respond to my neighbors with.
Just to clarify, do all the coaches pick kids from different teams or do they just select the kids from their own team?
I can't speak for Cleveland but we had the coaches nominate the 12 best players from the league, not just from his team.
The kids that are nominated are chosen by all Coaches involved, so favoratism is not a factor. I have a son on the 7/8 Coaches Pitch and I was very pleased with all the children and the entire team as a whole ! And once again, Vic Smothers (Head Coach) is awesome. A heart that we all want ! Great Job Cleveland ! From my understanding, this is the first time that the 7/8 team has represented Cleveland in the State Tourney, so we all should be proud !
There were seven teams in the recreation league at Cleveland. Each coach was allowed to nominate up to 5 players to be selected for the all-star team. I know that at least three teams nominated 5 players each and at leat 2 teams nominate only 1 or 2 players. From the list of nominated players, the coaches from each team picked the players they thought should be on the team. The players with the most votes played on the team. There were three players each from the two teams that were regular season co-champions and three players from the 3rd place team. One member each of the remaining four teams were also chosen to play on the all-star team. I am not sure if the vote came out that way or if it was by design that each team was represented. Either way, the choices were made very fairly.
