So you cant get caught with it. Has to stay in the book bag. It just isnt right people. You can put harry potter on ur desk for everyone to see and not the bible. Ugh.....
I dont understand why anyone would be against Harry Potter, or the thousands of books like it. It has nothing to do with the Bible. It's a complete work of FICTION ... and look at the millions of kids who are reading ... not playing video games or staring at their TVs or complaining that they're bored ... they're actually interested in READING because of this series. I'm SO happy to hear kids talking about books, I hope something new comes along to keep them interested!!!
Harry and the Bible *****Trying not to spoil but a little more detail!! Read at your own Risk*** I am also done with book seven. I loved the whole series!! I think its awesome, oddly addictive, but awesome. I was looking to talk about it a bit because my husband's a couple hours reading behind me and won't be able to talk about it 'till later tonight or tomorrow. I went a little cross eyed their at King's Cross and agian when Harry spoke to Voldermort at the end, I night have to reread some things to be sure of what all was being worked out there. But I think JK Rowling is awesome and I will read any further fiction she churns out I'm sure. By the By Tit4Tat, I am a Christian, I try to live an breathe the word of God every day of my life. You cannot get through this series without seeing things admirable even Christlike in the characters and events. The book itself points to afterlife, judgement and good and evil motifs that are very in line with Christianity. If you haven't, try reading it, look at it alongside the book, The Gospel According to Harry Potter by Connie Neal if you need to. The Lord gave us our minds and imaginations. It's fun to use them!!! Try Jr Tolkein and CS Lewis' fiction too, you will see these well respected Christain men also found it interesting to think about magic and other worlds too!!!
You're right, that's not right, and it's unconstitutional. The schools cannot tell your child not to carry a Bible, or not to read the bible on their own time, any more than they can have school sponsored religious programs. The schools are supposed to keep hands off our children's religious practices. Don't they have those "see you at the pole" events in Jo Co schools? Student-led Christian gatherings around the flagpole, strictly voluntary, and not led by teachers or administrators? That's the same idea, kids are allowed to do those things on their own. It's really unfortunate if some people have made the school administration think they have to make kids keep their bibles out of sight. I would like to know if there is a written policy to that effect, and if so, I think we should take it up with the school board.
Playing the devil's advocate here so to speak......I'm sure there are plenty of people who call the Bible a work of fiction as well. Craig
Your so right here, my 7 yr old is reading the 1st one with me, of course I got to help her with some of the words. If it gets her to read I'm all for it and I think it's a great way to get kids to read. Where before she would whine about us having our reading time, now she ask about it. Where when it first came out, my neices mom wouldn't let her read or see the movies, but she got the books and we let her read them and her father took her to the movies..the crap about witchcraft and all that stuff is such bull..like you said it's fiction... Sheri
Can you take that argument somewhere else? This thread has nothing to do with religion, it was about Harry Potter. They are not related.
I dont go for all this witchcraft mumbojumbo crap. I'm not worried about my kids reading about witches and warlocks and stuff. it's all just good fun. When i was a kid i loved escape from witch mountain and it didnt screw me up!
I understand entirely what the thread was started about, and I'm not the one that brought up the bible in the first place. And in case you happened to miss it there was a nice little green smilie on my post, which I'm sure that to most people that would probably mean that the post itself was in jest. So don't go getting your panties in a wad. Craig
I dont see a green smilie in your post. Sorry, I must be missing it. I was just trying to keep things light and fun, trying not to let people hijack the post with religion. So dont go getting your jock strap full of ben-gay.
I don't read Harry Potter, but have no problems with others that read it. My kids were never interested in these books. On the other hand, I love Nora Roberts and she has had her share with this type of fiction. This type of fiction doesn't bother me with the young reading it, what bothers me is the shows on like "One Tree Hill" and the "O.C."etc. that encourages teenagers having sexual relationships/underage drinking, these are the things that we should worry about corrupting our kids. At least with Harry Potter the parent would have to buy the book but with these shows one only has to turn on the TV, not to mention the daytime soaps are just as bad. No offense to you out there that watch the soaps, I've just never cared for them.
Just came back from Target, and they are selling the new Harry Potter book for $17.99 through Saturday!
oh man did you bring back old memories, would love to get ahold of that show for my daughter I loved it. Sheri
Not bad at all, got mine first day for 18.88 at Sam's and we are getting low right now, but I'm sure we will get more. Sheri
