Anybody know of good nearby camping spots....just the basics...tent camping with lots of trees n nature n stuff????? We just got back from a great campground, but it was four hours away...wondering if there is anywhere closer...
Yep, Jordan is nearby, we go several times a year. I haven't been, but a friend of my swears by Lake Gaston too.
They use to let you go camping in Clayton there off old Garner Rd, the name is escaping me.. Clemons? Not sure if they still do or not.
Clemmons Educational State Forest. They don't have camping there, but it's a nice day trip for picnicking and hiking. The last time I was there, some of the talking trees weren't working, but they might be fixed by now.
Yet one more vote for Jordan Lake. There is also a private campground on 42 east near I-95. It's called Rock Ridge. Not much info on the web, unfortunately. I haven't camped there myself (yet), but I did drive through to check it out. It looks pretty nice. Has many amenities (such as a pool and game room), and fairly clean. I do plan on camping there Labour Day weekend.
We used to take the grandchildren to Rock Ridge years ago, and they always enjoyed it. We all did. No recent experience there, though. Another place we always enjoyed is Medoc Mountain State Park. No pool or game room or anything, but nice fishing & hiking. It's a little farther away, I guess about halfway between Rocky Mount and the VA state line, and it's really not a mountain - the highest elevation is some 400 ft. No, I did not leave off a zero. But what a great place to get away from it all.
Taste of Haven Campground We went this past week end camping at the Taste of heaven campground in Newton Grove 1 mile off I-40. It was ok quite they have fishing, playground paddle boats and singing very quite, $20 a night full hook up. Jordan lake is great we go there all the time.
We've stayed at Rock Ridge many times. We like the pool, and it's very close by for those weekends we just want to get away from the house. VERY quiet, the owners keep a close watch on things. They don't do tent camping anymore though. There is an ostrich in a pen next to the campground that can be highly entertaining.
Jordan Lake is fun but if you want real tent camping with only the bare amenities (toilets, trash pick up, etc) then the North Shore of Carolina Beach is awesome. We go there several times a year, camp right on the beach and have a great time - we are actually heading that way tomorrow evening with a gang of 8 people including my grandkids. It costs $10 per night or you can buy a year pass for $40 and only 4wheel drive vehicles are allowed on the beach so there are no campers, electricity or running water except in the bathroom. Every night we build a great campfire and it is so awesome to sit by the fire with the waves rolling in.
Falls Lake - Holly Point campground - great camping Holly Point is a great campground. Park Ranger lives on site and the gates are locked each night. Heavily wooded. Bath houses. Swim beach. Boat ramp. Tent and RV camping. Sounds like a long way from 40/42 land, but here's a google map, and it's really worth the drive if you're going to stay a few days. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=...88,-78.557739&spn=0.507698,0.925598&z=10&om=1 I wouldn't take the route the map says but it gives an idea. Take I-40 and then 440 Outer Loop then 264 E to 540 to Creedmoor Rd (NC50 northbound). Right/east on NC 98 (Durham Rd) toward Wake Forest then left on NewLight Rd (at the light) and then the campground is on your right a few miles up. I've camped here many times since I only live a few miles from the site. Here's more info: http://ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/fala/falaholly.pdf Kent
My in-laws live in the community of Rock Ridge, and the camp ground that you are talking about is very nice and QUIET! There is a reservoir near there too where you can fish and boat, its called BuckHorn Reservoir.
