    Letter From Camp

    Dear Mom and Dad,

Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and are worried. We are okay. Only one of our tents and two sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Adam when it happened. Oh yeah, please call Adam's mother and tell her he is okay. He can't write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would have found Adam in the dark if it hadn't been for the lightning. Scoutmaster Keith got mad at Adam for going on a hike alone without telling any one. Adam said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn't hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas will blow up? The wet wood didn't burn, but one of the tents did and also some of our clothes. Matthew is going to look weird until his hair grows back. We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Keith gets the bus fixed. It wasn't his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked okay when we left. Scoutmaster Keith said that with a bus that old you have to expect something to break down. That's probably why he can't get insurance. We think it's a neat bus. He doesn't care if we get it dirty, and if it's hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the fenders. It gets pretty hot with 45 people in a bus. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrol man stopped and talked to us. Scoutmaster Keith is a neat guy. Don't worry, he's a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Jesse how to drive on the mountain roads where there isn't any traffic.. All we ever see up there are logging trucks. This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the lake. Scoutmaster Keith wouldn't let me because I can't swim, and Adam was afraid he would sink because of his cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood. Scoutmaster Keith isn't crabby like some Scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad about us not wearing life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the bus so we are trying not to cause him any trouble. Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Andrew dived into the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Steven and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Keith said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said he used to get sick that way with food he ate in prison. I'm so glad he got out and became our Scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. By the way, what is a pedal file? I have to go now. We are going to town to mail our letters. Don't worry about anything. We are fine.
    Love,
    Todd

Barney Fife - Learning the Preamble to the Constitution

I've watched this hundreds of times and I still get tickled at Barney.

I've used the Fife Method for memorizing a time or two myself. :)

One more for the kids - Foghorn Leghorn cartoon

An oldie but goodie I don't see much on TV/Satellite.

When cartoons were cartoons and funny, too.

    No computer animation here.

I always liked the ones with Foghorn and the young Chicken Hawk.

    Letter from my cousin Jake

    Anybody got relatives like this?

    Kent

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hey, cuz, I ain’t heard from you since the family reunion so I thought I’d drop you a line from the hill country of western NC.

Hope you and the family are doing well.

How’s sheriffing going? All those flat landers in Wake County keeping you busy?

By the way, I was just looking at our local paper that came today and, as usual, the front page is full of pictures of car wrecks and mug shots from the local dope dealers. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have no front page news.

Speaking of the Sheriff, Uncle Billy called the law out to his place again last night. His mind is getting worse and he still thinks his neighbors are spying on him and doing stuff to his house. He says they are filling up his gutters with leaves at night and hitting on the brick with an axe.

I tried to show him it was his own leaves falling and that the house was settling and causing the mortar to crack, but he don’t believe me. He keeps telling me he ain’t crazy.

Uncle Billy stays tired all the time from staying up at night trying to catch somebody messing with his place. He totes a pistol all the time and my aunt won’t go up to his place after dark without first calling. She’s scared to death he’ll shoot first and ask questions later.

Uncle Billy says there’s bugs in parts of his house and he won’t go into those rooms. I asked him to show me the bugs and he took me into his back bedroom. He pointed to the corner of the room and told me to be quiet and not mess with them or they’d be all over the house.

Of course there’s no bugs there and I reached down in the corner to show him and he just about jumped 2 feet high. He hollered for me to quit and don’t stir those bugs up, so we left the room so he’d calm down.

Granny is doing fine if we could just keep her off the roof of the house.

She likes to get up on top of the house and blow the pine straw off the shingles and the leaves out of the gutter with the leaf blower. She’ll be 77 this year and I keep telling her to call me to help her. I could at least hold the ladder for her. I told her she’s going to fall one day and lay in the yard until someone finds her.

Oh, before I forget, I took the kids to Greensboro the other day to the water park. Wet and Wild. Had a ball. My butt is still sore from sliding down all those slides. They got one ride called The Edge. It looks like a giant skateboard ramp young’uns use but here you slide down off one edge with a big float and slide up the other side. I couldn’t help it, but I plum hollered when we started going up the other side. It looked just like you was going off the edge.

Cuz, I got to ask you, are we the only folks in the country who don’t have a tattoo? Seemed like everybody at the water park had at least one tattoo if not more. Men, women, girls, boys, they all had tattoos. And what’s the deal with the women getting these big old tattoos across their backside? I just don’t understand that at all.

I saw a lot of funny looking tattoos that looked like some sort of Chinese hieroglyphics. Who would pick that out? One fella I asked said it meant “One who is fearless”. Yeah, right, I thought. That’s just what the man told him who sold him the tattoo. It probably means, “Son of a constipated wart hog” in Chinese. People will believe just about anything.

Maybe more folks around home have them, but you just can’t see them with their regular clothes on. Speaking of clothes, cuz, there are just some folks who don’t need to be wearing no spandex bathing suits, if you know what I mean. Some of those women had more rolls than the Merrita Bread Company.

If you ever go to that water park be sure to take something to drink and eat. It costs a small fortune. There’s not a water fountain in the whole dang park. I kept having to put my head under the spigot in the bathroom to get a drink of water. Who in their right mind would pay almost $3 for water that’s running free out of the sink?

Well, cuz, I gotta go. The missus is just about ready to come home from work and I promised to sweep the house up some. And you know it don’t count unless a woman actually sees you running the vacuum cleaner. So I need to get this letter mailed out and get the vacuum out from under our double-wide and watch for her coming up the driveway.

Take care, cuz, and don’t be a stranger.

    Jake

Movie Recommendation - The Straight Story

Release date: 1999, starring Richard Farnsworth

    Rated: G

Something the entire family can watch together without fear that something inappropriate is coming up next. When's the last time that happened?

    Roger Ebert Review: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19991015/REVIEWS/910150304/1023

I came across this video while looking for something else and thought I'd recommend it to those who haven't seen or heard of it.

It's based on a true story about a man who drives a lawnmower 300 miles to see his dying brother.
