So, my husband loves sauerkraut on his hot dogs, but I can't stand even the smell of it, so I've never bought any. I decided to just hold my nose and make him happy by serving some kraut dogs, but I have no idea where to get good kraut. I saw some cans of it in the grocery store. Is that the only way to buy it, or can you get it fresh somewhere? Also, has anyone found a brand that is really good? Any help for the kraut challenged??? Thanks!!!

I don't know the brand name, but I like the one that is sold in the refrigerated section in a plastic bag. I don't like the canned ones. DH and I like it on hotdogs and bratwursts... I know at Lowes Foods, it is in the refrigerated section where the hotdogs, sausages and packaged deli meats are. Its at the end, near where the Klaussen refrigerated jars of pickles are kept too (closest to the wine aisle - in the Clayton store).

The best I have found locally is in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. (NOT the canned junk) I think it is Klaussin??

It is not the kind I had as a kid, but it is the best I have had recently.

Do you know if he likes it will the caraway seeds? You can get it with or without. I think there is one other choice.... like a sweet vs a sour, but I cant remember the correct wordage!! :)

Good luck and good for you to make this sacrifice for him!

My maiden name was Deutsch.... yes, I am familiar with sauerkraut. I grew up eating it with a pork roast at my grandmother's house, and to be honest I'm sure it was just out of a can, but the best I've had was in a jar beside the Vlasic pickles in the refrigerated section by the hot dogs. Sorry, can't remember the brand name. I think "fresh sauerkraut" is a bit of an oxymoron actually. From what I know, sauerkraut came about because the old-timer Germans were looking for a way to preserve their cabbage through the winter. As long as it's still crunchy, it's good to me! I love it with a Nathan's hot dog and some spicy brown mus-My Friend! :)

Canned stuff is OK. I like it better on a dog than the stuff in the cooler. Try mus-My Friend,(or thousand island dressing),swiss cheese, and kraut with a Carolina Packer 'red dog', makes a great "reuben dog"!!!

I've used Silver Floss sauerkraut for years with pork roast, hot dogs, etc. I've tried the refrigerated stuff, and didn't like it. I'm sure it's just because I grew up with my mom using the canned Silver Floss.

Canned kraut is very bad. I have heard the bagged is pretty good, but you end up with a larger amount.

Somebody makes one in a glass jar too that is mighty tasty. I pop the lid and pick at it all the live long day!

Kuhne makes kraut as well as gherkins.(Think they're imported from Germany) Almost the same brine for both. Hard to find, only place I've seen them is Big Lots, and then not all the time!(hardly ever!) But when you find them, GREAT pickles and kraut!

    Totally off subject, BUT!
My little boy made me so proud the other day...
So I buy me some low fat hot dogs by Oscar Mayer, which everyone should know is a brown hot dog. Well I didn't have any Carolina Packers thawed out and I asked my son if he wanted one of mama's hot dogs. He looked at me with a face of disgust and said "Mama that isn't a hot dog. Hot Dogs are RED!"

Yes, I almost fell on the floor!:lol::lol: And I thawed out a RED dog for him.

back to the kraut... isn't that old or rotten cabbage?:?

I believe it is "aged" cabbage, LOL!

Your story (which is hilarious BTW) reminds me of the time my Mom went to make pancakes for all the grandkids one morning by getting out the pancake mix, the milk, etc. One of my nieces pipes up "Granny, that isn't the way you make pancakes.................they come out of the freezer!" I thought we would all die laughing and my sister was so busted!
