i am thinking the gas company possibly, mostly because the line into the house was capped and the valve on the tank has a red plug in it. i have not used the gas since i have been in the house ( 2+ years ) if it was the gas company it would of been nice if they sent a letter or something. the tank says thermogas on it. anywhere i can go buy a regulator? i dont want a contract with any particular gas company, just someone to come fill it when i want it filled. the tank is a big one, typically the ones for gas logs. also my gas logs are broken ( the burner plate ( i think thats what it is called ) is all rusty and cracked ) so i would need to get a new set of gas logs. anyone have any suggestions/tips/etc. ? thanks in advance! edit: i an looking online for a new set of gas logs and i need to measure the set i have now, what/how do i measure?
We use Amerigas. We are on a will call plan so they only come when we call and request a delivery. They deliver on the next day they are in our area (which is usually within a week). We are using their tank. There is no charge for the tank unless we do not use at least one tank full a year. In that case they will charge something like $100 for tank rental.
Gas Log Replacement Your existing gas logs should have a metal information plate attached to it. Write down the information (mfgr, model, BTUs, etc). Also, you may be able to locate a user manual by searching the Internet for your particular manufacturer. As far as dimensions, just measure the HxWxD of your fireplace. If you can locate the user manual, then you can take that info to your local hardware store to find a model comparable or better. Be sure to have a professional install the gas logs and make the connections.
i have looked all over the gas logs, and there is no id plate anywhere i am guessing that since the gas company ( if thats who took the regulator ) did what they did, they are gonna leave the tank. i have been in this house for over 2 years and never looked into using it because the gas logs were broken. so what i am gonna do now is paint the tank, anchor it to the ground and call it mine. of course i will need to get a regulator, but i dont think thats rocket science to get one.
The first stage regulator for the large tanks is more expensive than just buying a new 60 gal. tank at lowes. Make sure your new log set comes with a second stage regulator. Here's a good reference if you've never done this kind of project before. Amature installation of propane to your house is tapping on the danger zone. http://www.teecoproducts.com/catalo...02 PDF pages/Two Stage Regulation Systems.pdf
thanks for the info. i dont know what size the tank is but its big, probably ~5 feet tall and ~3 feet in diameter. sounds like a i need the first stage regulator. what i am wanting to do is use this tank to fuel my gas logs and my grill. i will have to split the line coming off the tank ( right now its just for the gas logs ). i am confident i can work with propane and make the connections secure so thats not an issue but i am aware of the dangers. would lowes have a first stage regulator?
Installing a first stage requires that you know the capacity & BTU/Hr ratings of the apliance it will supply and tank pressure / capacity. A regulator will cost you about $70 depending on the info above. You may also have a tank with an outdated DOT inspection. That's a pressure check that is applied to the tank every few years. The date is stamped into the steel on the tank. Remember, if you do this yourself and you don't follow code or make a mistake and it causes an explosion or fire, your insurance company will not cover your house or liability damage to others.
ouch, that would suck. so i take it if i have a contract with a gas company they take care of the DOT inspection? also what does the DOT ( dept. of transportation i assume?) care about the propane tank i have?
