I am so glad you posted that. Everyone LOVES to complain and pee and moan about teacher's. YES they ask for alot....but the people complaining EXPECT alot. I appreciate your wife and all teacher's for the job they do and try to do in today's world.

Being a parent that works Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:00pm.....its kind of hard to volunteer. The principal at our school said it was completely up to the teacher for keeping their websites up to date. I'd have to disagree with the 99% of them loving teaching. Most of the teachers at my sons school act like they hate every minute of being there. And the kids take note. If all these teachers love to teach, why is the teacher turn over rate so high in NC. They can claim its the salary all they want, I see teachers driving Lexus, Mercedes, and Jaguars to school. I have relatives that work for the school system and know they get paid VERY well.

You can view the salaries on line of principals, vice principals, and superintendents. I saw it last year and was in shock. Also, why are they paying for Parker's cell phone coverage. Hello, when I worked, I paid for my own cell service and so does my husband. School should not foot the bill of the administrators. There was an article on all this over the summer I believe nad it listed what Parker's School "expenses" were. An eye opener, that's for sure. Waste of money that should be going to the teachers/ the kids. He gets paid enough. Just look at his salary. Does someone on here still have the link to school salaries and such? I'll try to locate it. You'll think differently once you see it. I know we did. I used to want to substitute till they told me I'd have to drive a bus. Trust me, you wouldn't want me driving a bus--LOL. I have enough trouble w/ a huge van.

Many teachers I've spoken with in the past said they start out here and then move to Wake County to teach as it pays $10K higher to teach over there. Why wouldn't you move to get paid more to do the same job?

I also used to volunteer alot of time reading to students in class. Can't anymore due to the sibling rule..can't bring them in. I used to help check papers at home. Try to volunteer if I can but if you have a younger sibling, hard to do. When I try to call teachers to speak w/ them after school at around 3:30/ 4:00, almost every time, they all have left.

The websites do help parents keep in touch especially, when the students forget stuff at school.

    Take care,

    Stephanie--mom to 7

Agree the teachers are overall a great group and work hard - THANK YOU to all of them!! And not trying to be the odd one out.... but I never expected the county to help pay for school supplies. I think most of the funds support free and reduced lunches and other things like this too so it is hard to make everyone happy. Also the lottery, yes it does seem like a bunch of you know what but from my understanding the poorest counties get the most money, and with Wake, Harnett and Johnston growing like they are I am sure the little amount of money they get goes to the growing population problems and to make things more diverse or equal for all???

I have to disagree, Every teacher my two girls have had (with the exception of one) are in it for the love of teaching, and if you consider $40k a year when you've been teaching for 15 years a lot of money, ummm it's nothing. Maybe their husbands make a lot of money to afford them those nice cars. I have a two really close friends that are teachers, well one is a senior teacher and makes $40k a year and the other is a principal and make $85k a year. Neither work in the JC school system, both back in Harnett Co. where I'm from.

It sounds like you've got a problem with the school system in general by your above statement. I personally think that JC has one of the best school systems in the state and we retain really GREAT teachers. If I disliked things about my children's school, I would talk to administrators about it and if things didn't change, then I'd transfer them to another school or homeschool.

Well said SB! and I agree. My two boys are in 5th grade, we have had nothing but fabulous teachers who go above and beyond for them and love their jobs. I still hear from a couple of teachers, just to see how they are doing. Because they want to.

Most of the teachers at my youngest child's school are all new this year.

So far, I am not impressed.

Thank you for the info on the board of education and their contact info. I know I have been complaining quite a bit lately to my husband on the amount we had to spend to get our children ready. It was a great suggestion someone had to go to the meetings so you can hear what is exactly going on. I realize the teachers get a small allotment to spend at the beginning of the year and rely on the parents to help out.

I do have a problem with the system in general, cause they SUCK! At least they did when my son was getting beat up, stabbed with pencils and coming home with all kids of injuries. And when you go to the school board who says they will handle it and they don't. Go to my sons school and listen to what those parents and kids say. You'll think different.
I know you can't go by just one school, but ours was terrible!

Do you mean the Clayton News-Star article on Dr. Parker's contract extension (where he was given a $3000/year phone budget, among other "perks")?

You can't bring in a brother or sister?

Just how young is your brother or sister?

Here's a suggestion. Why couldn't some of the supplies be recycled? Like scissors and unused school supplies sent in. If a class of 24 students sends in a pair of scissors each, why not collect them at year's end and save them for the next year's class? Yes, the current child's parents paid for the scissors but that child will also be using a recycled pair in their next grade like everyone else a grade lower. The teachers could go through the supplies they have left over and coordinate their lists to accomodate what they need. For instance, paper, pens and pencils. If a teacher sees that he/she may have enough of this to accomodate his/her class for awhile it can make the list show not as much for a parent to have to buy. Or maybe design the carriculum to be more "hands on" and not so much "supply usage". Kids learn better at "hands on" anyway, in my opinion. They'll remember what they learned than having to write a 500 essay on it. If a teacher sees that they know the material and are confident in this and the proper testing has been done, then dern it, the kids know it. Why waste paper, supplies and all sorts of markers and writing untensils and TIME going over and over and over the same thing? We had a teacher like that in my son's 4th grade class who came from a Montessori school. At first it was strange, but I saw my kid LOVE school, grades soar and other teachers observe her technique. She didn't have to have all this "stuff" to do it with either.

I have been lucky with my daughter when it comes to teachers so far. (Knock on wood) I have seen things I do not like at her school. I do know some teachers myself who say its just a job. I am very worried about when middle school comes I have heard too much stuff about the middle school that she will be going too. But who knows maybe they will build another one by then.

You need supplies to do hands on activities. They may be different supplies but you still need something to put your hands on

NP, I wouldn't have normally noticed, except that I had a conversation last week with some parents about how extravagent his cell phone allowance was.
