I have had to call AAA for towing, flat tires, keys locked in car, etc. several times over the years. Do people normally tip them for their service? If so, how much? Thanks.

My son is a tow truck driver (not affiliated with AAA). He says that tipping is encouraged. He actually doesn't make as much money as you (or I) might think, and his company takes potential tipping into account in his pay. He says that people don't generally think about tipping the tow truck driver like they would a taxi or a waitress.

As to how much, that I can't say. For me, I would tip a couple of dollars per mile for the tow. Other things like unlocking the car or getting a jump, it would depend on how much of a hurry I was in and how fast they responded (and how much cash I have with me).

Yes, I would. Because of gas rising price and low salary, I would tip this person. I remember years ago, when I was a newspaper carrier and gas price was high, I've had several customers tipped me once a month and it helped me to get gas for my car to get my job done. Most people who work with their vehicle usually spent their tips on gas.

The last time a AAA person helped me was a few years back, to change a tire on the beltline in traffic! I tipped him 10.00 - It was worth far more to me, but that was all the cash I had with me at the time. It was hot, 5:30 PM, and I was wearing a dress, complete with heels and stockings. No way I wanted to change that sucker myself!

Have an LEO check in with you if you feel unsafe

Don't hesitate to call the Sheriff's Office, Highway Patrol or your local police dept. to check in with you if your vehicle becomes disabled, especially at night, you've got children, an elderly passenger, etc.

We'll be glad to check on you and wait until the tow truck or your ride comes by unless there's alot of calls backed up.

If I had to go I would offer you a lift to a nearby convenience store, etc., if that's what it takes to ensure your safety.

I keep a small cooler full of ice cold bottled water for these types of calls. With 100 degree temps, waiting awhile for a tow truck can get pretty miserable.

    Wake Co. Sheriff's office - 919-856-6900; night - just call 911
Highway Patrol - *HP on your cell phone or 911
