***Got a new one off Ebay for $25.48 w/extra strings, extra bow, rosin, case, and shoulder rest***Are there any parents who have a 1/2 violin and accessories that their child is no longer using? I've got a 3rd grader who is wanting to try this year~
Try Tarheel Music in Smithfield. Downtown on Market Street. They have a lay-away plan and you can buy used instruments there. They even repair. A great group of people
The Neighborhood Music Academy in Clayton is pretty good. You can rent an instrument or rent to own. I think if your child outgrows it you can switch it for another even if you are buying. Ours was around $30/month and you can turn it in at any time.
Neighborhood Academy of Music Clayton Nc, 359-6105 They have a lay-away plan as well. You may not want to buy a used one? If something happens to it , or maybe it is lost, you will be out the $ spent. There, they will repair and have plans set up for lost items. Also fairly cheap!
We got ours off ebay for like 30$ case and all. You dont have to pay through the nose for these and they sound the same as a 100$ one.
definitely check ebay first. Ours was ~ $30 too...if your child becomes a prodigy or really loves it, you can always upgrade...if not, you're not out a lot. We did that when the kids wanted to try trumpet and flute as well...
I was thinking that very same thing . . . why would you only want to play with 1/2 of the violin vs. the whole thing?
Violin sizes Children need to have violins that are shorter in length. They measure a child from his chin to the palm to see how long of a violin he needs. I believe a 1/2 size is around 12" long for the main part. They come in sizes as small as 1/8 (yes, they are tiny). Children with short arms would not be able to use an adult's violin due to its size. Hope that helps.
Thanks, JM. My Little One is going to take violin this year (UGH). I've talked her out of it for 2 yrs but, it's the fad thing to do I guess. Was wondering how they were going to measure her. Frogger
