Last night my truck was broken into.

There was no damage to the truck, and no signs of forced entry. I am very anal about locking it to the point where I'll lock it when I just go into a mini-mart (I'll even hit the button twice which will produce a "honk" from the horn to tell me it's locked.)

All they got was my GPS.

    It's a Magellan Maestro 3100.

If anyone sees it, or hears about a used GPS for sale, let me know.

Clif, I feel for you. My DH's car was broken into last year. They took his stereo, the amp, his CD's, etc...

    It wasn't locked.

It's probably kids, or someone who knew what you had and wanted fash cash. Good luck getting your GPS back.

Sorry, Clif. Your thread title is appropriate too, it does make you feel violated, doesn't it? Hope they catch whoever did it, and you get your GPS back.

    Update:

I called my insurance company (Progressive Direct). They took some info and said an adjuster will give me a call within a couple of hours.

It's my first claim with this insurance company, so we'll see how they handle it.

    Well, speak of the devil...

Right after I clicked "Submit Reply" on the last post, the phone rang.

The adjuster said that, since the GPS was not installed in the vehicle, NC laws says they don't have to cover it. Even if they did, though, I have a $500 deductable, so that wouldn't even cover the cost of the GPS.

He said that renters insurance would have covered it, but that's one thing I forgot to get when I moved into the apartment.

    So, basically, I'm SOL.

I didn't know you'd filed a claim, I would have told you not to.

The adjuster is right, if it's not permenantly installed, it's not covered.

Chalk this one up to lessons learned.

However, even if you did have renters insurance, I would have never recommended filing a claim for just the stolen GPS, if it was less than $500, you can replace it yourself and not have a claim on your record.

May I presume, if it's a non-claim, it doesn't go on my permanent record?

    Nope, don't presume that.

It will show as a claim, but with a payout of $0.

DH's van was broken into earlier this year, what a pain in the ... you know what.
Clif, you might want to start checking pawn shops from 4042 to Smithfield to Fuquay.

I'm sorry you have to go thru this - been there done that got a t-shirt - unfortunatley.

Renters insurance is very cheap - we got a policy up here when we moved in. DIRT CHEAP!!!

    Call magellan

Thought about calling your service provider and seeing if they can locate it (assuming the idiot who stole actually is using it...)?

GPSs are receive only. Since it doesn't broadcast anything, there is no way to trace it.

    Didn't know that. That sux.

Check the pawn shops in Smithfield first. The one up here is pretty suspicious of certain situations. I'd look there too, of course, but I think someone would try to pass it off in Smithfield first.

    So sorry, man!

Sorry to hear about the theft Clif.

There has been a GPS theft outbreak in the US in the last 2 months. Reports from all over the country saying GPS theft is up by 500%. They are saying you have a "Steal Me" sign on your car if you leave the units in plain sight right now. The cars that are locked are getting the windows smashed. Unplug it and stick it under the seat.

One guy came up with a great idea. He's printing window decals that say, "GPS Unit protected by LoJack, Go ahead and steal it" FYI: LoJack does not do GPS units ...

So sorry for ya Clif, hopefully the adage, what goes around comes around will apply to the low lifes that feel they are entitled to someone else's belongings.

Sorry to hear about that Clif... while I don't own a GPS yet.. I just haven't decided if I really need one. Everyone I know that has one, has said the same thing, that if you leave it in the car... its just asking to be stolen. They all take them out with them all the time, or hide them out of view.

If you get one get a car alarm if you do not already have one. Some people will take anything not tied down.

Sorry Clif , maybe they will catch who ever did it. Most the time people who take things from cars do it again and again until they get caught. Just keep in mind they will screw up and get caught if not for what they took from you they will get caught for taking from someone else, what comes around goes around . They will get whats coming to them.
