When I got my renewed @1 1/2 years ago, they told me NOT to smile. My M-I-L was told to take off her glasses and not to smile. That was just in August in Clayton.
Ok, I've had personal experiences and heard stories about the DMV in Clayton. Of those of you who were told not to smile, did they all happen in Clayton, or in other towns as well?
I think its all of the DMV's I was told in Clayton but know others that went to Smithfield and were told the same...
I'm convinced that the people who work at the DMV are on a power trip. They are the Barney Fifes of the the government-office-world. Seriously...when I took my daughter for her driver's test to get her permanent license, this rather burly woman called me out to the car when the test was done. She said - with great melodramtic authority - that she "needed to show me something." She proceeded to tell me that the back lights on my daughter's car were not working, and that any other DMV tester would have refused to take my daughter out on her road test...but that she was cutting me a break "this time." I had my daughter turn on the lights and step on the brake...and I saw no lights out. The woman pointed to where she said the lights were not working. I looked at her for a moment incredulously and said: "Those lights aren't supposed to work. They aren't lights. They are reflectors. There is no lamp in there to light up." She gave me a stern look and proceeded to argue with me about how the reflectors on the back of the car should light up. I even opened up the trunk to show her there is no lamp in there, and no socket for a lamp. She refused to accept her mistake and explained very hautely that "the conversation was over. And I expect you to have those lights fixed the next time to you come to 'MY' DMV office." I almost saluted her. But I had to keep my hand free so I could smack my daughter who was sitting in the front seat of the car laughing her head off.
When we first moved here, I of course had to get a new NC license, when I went, there was hardly any line and the NICEST employee was behind the counter by the name of Craig Olive. I wish I could say the rest of my experiences with that particular office were as pleasant. I remember being absolutely amazed at how friendly and informative he was about the area since we were obviously newcomers. Too bad they have lost the personal touch.
But was this Clayton, or elsewhere? Lise I said, I've both heard harrowing stories, and had a personal experience or two about Clayton DMV. I've also heard that the Garner DMV was much nicer (although more crowded).
I finally went in and switched to a North Carolina license at the Clayton office yesterday. I purposely smiled just to test what they would say and long behold, I have a smiling photo. But I also would say that they do lack alittle in the friendly department.
I always get mine in Garner, to me they are nice but it is always crowded they didnt tell me anything. my dad got his in raleigh and told him not to smile and remove his glasses, my friend got hers in fuquay and she was allowed to wear her glasses and my other friend got hers in wilson and she wasnt allowed to smile.
The trick is to get there at 7:45 before all the illegals jam the place by the van full. Garner office has always been nice when I've been there.
That's funny and also the same thing my daughter would do.  I think I've dealt with "Frau Blücher" (Horse whinny) at the Clayton DMV too? I think it's the shoes they make those ladies, or "Frau Blücher" (Horse whinny), wear with their uniforms. ("Horse whinny" = Young Frankenstein Movie)
I'd would have responded that it is her job to administer the driver's license test, not to issue vehicle safety inspections. I'd have said that or busted a gut trying to restrain myself. Craig
