Been doing some research on Mace/Pepper Spray for when I DO decide to go walking.

Anyone carry Mace. Looking for something I can wear around my wrist and just pull the trigger. Don't need a childs safety cap etc...

    Where to buy locally??? (Raleigh/Durham)

That GI Joe (or something like that) store on 70 in Clayton. Haven't been there in about a year, not sure if it's still open. There used to be a Radio Shack near it. Between Pancho's and the light by Burger King. They had quite a few different options to choose from last time I was there. (about a year)

harleygirl: this is a PERSONAL recommendation: PEPPER SPRAY

Get a cannister that will do a stream spray or at least let you convert to a stream otherwise you'll be eating some, too, if there's a breeze.

You don't want to have to worry about which way the wind is blowing when you need it.

Plus, you'll be able to adjust your aim better with a stream and also engage your target at a greater distance.

Aim for the EYES, NOSE, MOUTH.

Just google "pepper spray vs mace" to get plenty of reasons to choose pepper spray.

Other recommendations: take a good whistle with you, a nice walking stick, and a cell phone.

I've never seen actual mace for sale, does it still exist? I got my pepper spray at Lawmans http://lawmens.com/ which is located at 3319 Anvil Pl. (off Tryon Rd) in Raleigh. But they're only open weekdays until 5:00, so it can be annoying trying to get by there.

The areas that each are targeted to affect are different, pepper spray is designed to be sprayed directly into the eyes for optimum effective while mace has more of an effect on one breathing system. Having been a prison guard in the past we had to go through the training which involved the use of each on us so taht we would know what the inmates are experiencing. Of the two Mace has a affect on a larger area (ie group of people) that pepper spray does. However in the 3 years of working 3rd shift at Polk I've seen guys fight back against mace while they quickly gave up when hit with the pepper spray.

Get a stun gun. You can order them online. I have heard pepper spray can dry up or weaken after a few months. Keep your phone with you.Always go walking in daylight where theres alot of people around. You should also try and get a walking partner if not a person take a dog with you. Do what I plan on doing if I ever get confronted by a nutt, act crazy as h*** like you just got out the funny farm and scare them away. Start talking to yourself slap yourself in the face just cary on like a crazy person and they may run away . LOL

It seems to me that you can't just buy mace without a special permit. Everything they sell to the average joe, no matter what it says on the package, is just pepper spray.

Well I was going to carry one of my guns, but DH didn't like that idea (just incase some big dude(s) gets it from me before I shoot). Got a switch blade I always carry with me - everywhere. Just don't want to be a victim. Wanting something that I don't have to be 1ft from the person to use it IF I have to. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's a knife I bought in S.C at the bike rally. Everyone I know has one.

I also have a conceal carry permit.

Maybe I'll try that. I only have one pair of stilletos

Unless it's changed the law states that any automatic weapon that is not subject to resistance while opening is illegal. In other words a stilleto that has a blade break on it would be legal while one that does not would be illegal. And I have yet to see a switchblade that was not subject to resistance.

Also as case studies have shown a semi-trained attacker with a knife can act quicker than a trained concealed carry defender can react, atleast up to about the 15 foot range.
