42 is the highway number, not the speed limit!

i've lived out here for 9 years now, and i can't figure out why nobody wants to go the speed limit on 42. get your thumb (and by thumb i mean head) out of your butt (and by butt i mean ***)! it's a 55 zone in most places. GTFO!

of course, in my neighborhood, where the posted speed is 25, most people do 50 or more. go figure

Making it worse is that 42 is horrible for passing all the way out to 42 from Clayton and then to the east of Clayton for a good distance. Only one or two opportunities to pass and that's it.

I have the opposite problem on 42. I'm going at least the speed limit and people crawling my arse to go faster! Can't wait for the fly by to open and all that traffic dump on the 2-laned road :? .

I drive HWY 42 a lot. I definitely 'feel the need for speed' BUT because of the number of deer who have crossed my path in the early morning (4:30am - 6:30am) and dusk hours I WILL NOT drive the speed limit during those hours- I don't crawl, but I do slightly below in the area between Old Fairgrounds Rd - light and Old Stage Rd. If you're behind me, you're welcome to pass - I'm not taking on a deer in a compact car - sorry, just have seen far too many of them especially when construction starts tearing stuff up.

A police officer pulled over a car for ding 20 in a 55 zone. He approached the car and saw four little old ladies, two in the front and two in the back. Stepping up to the driver's window he said, "Ma'am, I pulled you over for going too slow." The little grey-haired driver said, but officer, I was doing the speed limit, look there the sign says 20". The officer looked where she was pointing and said, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but that not a speed limit sign, that the highway sign, you're on Hyw 20." Just then, the officer looked in at the passengers and noticed they were white as sheets and completely silent. He asks the diver, "Ma'am, is there something wrong with your passengers?" "No," she says, "We just got off Hwy 115."

it's not about relaxing. it's not about me being late getting somewhere. most of the time, i'm just trying to get home. it's more about flow and not wanting to spend my time sitting in a car when i don't have to.

let me put it to you this way: if you were on 40 driving home after a long day at work, and were running the speed limit (65 or 70), and you came up behind three cars running side-by-side at 50, you wouldn't be the least bit frustrated? or feel a little held up? what if it happened not just once, but over and over and over time after time? have you never complained about people going too slow on a highway?

there is a law about minimum speed on a highway. it used to be posted everywhere...like in a 55 zone, the minimum was posted at 45 (if i remember correctly. haven't seen one of those signs in a long time). well, i constantly get behind people doing 35 and 40 in a 55 zone on 42. they need to move along or get out of the way of those of us who want to run the speed limit...

and re: deer. fine. i'll pass you if it's safe to do so, and if there's a passing zone. but if your a conscientious driver, and you notice you've got several people backed up behind you, how about pulling off and letting them go by? in the state of washington they have signs all over stating that holding up 5 cars or more is unlawful. they'll give you a ticket for it. the law there says you must pull over at a safe point and let traffic go by you. and deer are not a problem 24/7/365.

it hasn't mattered what time of day, what day of the week, or what month of the year it is. i'm just saying that in my 9 years of experience, it happens more often than not. noon. midnight. spring. summer. fall. whatever. it's a highway. go.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but this ain't Washington. If Washington is so much better, I thiink you should move there.

There aren't many safe places to pull over without fear of rolling over into a gully.

    Well said, lol!

My personal favorite: Your driving along, last car in a line of them, some space between you and the car in front of you since you should allow for the 3 second rule right?? Then some MORON pulls out from a side street right in front of you, you slam on your breaks to keep from hitting them, they don't accelerate or make any attempt to come up to the speed of traffic, then proceed to turn off a couple streets down. WTH don't they just freaking wait till it's completely clear if that's all they are going to do??

don't be an ***. i know where i live. i'm a 7th generation local. there are minimum speeds here, too, smart guy. washington was just an example because of the specific signs they have. are you just unable to carry on a discussion about something without a snide comment? try responding to the substance of the whole ost, not just one line you decide to pick out and criticise.

and there are PLENTY of places to pull off. stores, driveways, intersections, whatever.

edit: ok, i just looked it up. minimum speed in north carolina is 40 in a 55, 45 in a 60.

that's cool. mainly my problem with slow traffic is that i have so many better ways to spend my time. i could be home with my kid for 15 more minutes, or working for another half hour, or cooking supper, or housework, or 12 million other things. i'd rather get home in a half hour than an hour, because that's an extra half hour of my time i can't get back.

just one of my pet peeves. doesn't ruin my life or anything, just annoys me, that's all

I'd say the problem on 42 is not enough speed limit signs. If I'm not sure what the speed is I always do 45 to 50. For eample take Old Drug Store Rd.. According to NC Law if the speed is not posted than the standard 35 is required. I was also told that if you turn off one road with a posted limit the speed remains the same untill you see a new sign. If thats true, Old Drug Store is 55MPH from Hwy 50 to Hwy 42 and 45MPH from Hwy 42 to Hwy 50. Because there is not one posted speed sign on the entire road? The really odd thing about that road is anyone coming off Cleaveland School Rd. can do 55MPH in either direction??????? So if you get stopped on that road for speeding ... remember .. you came off Cleavland School Rd.

So, you see, you may be behind someone not familiar with the area so use a little good judgement and give them a break. Also, believe me when I tell you, "Life is way to short to rush." That is just way too true when you get older and the years start screaming by in an instant.

yeah, i'm 40, so they're screaming by fast enough. which is exactly why i'd rather spend my time productively or at home than waiting around for someone to get their head out of the clouds, or get off their cell phone and drive.

and i'm not tailgating and being a dick or anything. i try to give people breaks as much as possible. again, this is more of an annoyance i'm speaking of. on the other hand, STUPID doesn't deserve much of a break.

and just so you know, it's only 35 on unposted roads in municipalities. if you're outside town limits, unmarked roads are 55. i found this out when i looked it up before speed limit signs were posted in my neighborhood. kinda hard to complain about how fast people are going in the neighborhood, when the speed limit was technically 55 since we had no signs....

I think this area has grown enough now that they should be widening some of these roads.... Then we can safely pass the slow pokes without sending our passengers in to cardiac arrest.....

You know, what gets me is that y'all are in too much of a rush. Take it easy, slow down and smell the roses.
