What are some good trees or shrubs to plant arount my property that will give us a year round privacy hedge?

Needs to have the following characteristics:

    Full all year long
    gets TALL
    disease resistant
    wind resistant (high winds here)
    GROWS FAST!!!

I want to plant this fall. Would love a privacy fence but that is not an option right now. Already have a chain link fence bordering part of the property but I need PRIVACY there too.

Wax myrtles would be a good choice and they are native to this area.

    Hmmm...

Something fast growing, dense, and lasts all year long.

    How about kudzu?

    Clif, ....kudzu

Leyland Cypress....yeah - that's what I'm leaning towards. However, one of my neighbors put these in several years ago and then they got attacked by those cocoon worm things that can kill a tree in days. Her DH had to spend much time spraying them with poison. Was hoping to avoid that.

Hmmmm...I'll have to look up wax myrtles - are they green year round?

I'm pretty sure we have the leland cypresses and my husband loves them, says he wants to put them up between us and the new neighbors. (we currently have them in back only) we've been here less than 2 years and they're probably 5' already and growing very thick.

You can treat leylands once a year in the Fall with a systemic treatment that you just water them with and the bagworms leave them alone. They are the fastest growing for a privacy barrier or you can try Emerald Arbovite - very similar, just do not grow quite as fast.

    shrubs

Plant either privettes (sp?) or ligustrium. Both are very hardy, drought tolerant, insect and disease resistant and grow like crazy. Leyland cypresses are also a good grower, but they tend to get bag worms and I have heard that they will start dying in 10 -15 years. We have Leyland cypresses and they are beautiful, but if you dont spray them every spring, they will get full of bag worms. Yuck!

Eleganus? That is like the huge hedge that is growing off the 440 when you get off the cary exits.

See my first post about treating to prevent bagworms on leylands - it works - i have 13 in my yard and they are doing great - spraying is too much of a pain once they get so large.

Kaci, What is the name of the systemic that you use on your Leylands and where do you get it? If it works, I will definately go get some and put it out this weekend!! You are right, spraying in the spring is a real chore, especially when the Leylands get some size on them, mine are huge!!

I have planted both Leland Cypress and Ligustrums and find the Ligustrums grow faster and work better as hedge. they stay green all year long and really spread out nicely. It also depends on how high you want them, cypress will grow very tall, where as Ligustrums only about 8-10Ft. Hope that helps!

Kaci, can you give me the name of the treatment? Where do you get it.

Also, where would all of you suggest I get my trees/plants at a great price??

I 2nd ligustrum. Also, red cedars are relatively inexpensive, (NC Forestry service, grow fast, and right time to plant.

Well, I never got my trees planted last fall but I'm about ready to try again. Where is a good place to buy from.

I'm still not too sure which trees/shrubs I will plant. I'm re-thinking the cypress now since they have a short lifespan. I still need a fast growing, over 6-8' tall, thick, full yearound, wind resistant and long lifespan type of hedge.

I'm looking up some of the ones suggested here before.

My Leyland Cyprus trees are 10-1/2 years old (I know this for a fact because I planted them in October of '97 when I was 5 months pregnant... and you don't forget doing a job that big when you're preggers!) Anyway, we have 41 in our yard. They got bagworms once, probably about 5 years ago, and DH sprayed them with Malathion(sp?), available at Lowe's. I have yet to see another live bagworm on any of them.

Kaci, please do share the name of the systemic treatment because if we see bagworms again there is no way we'd ever be able to spray the tops of them now!

Any suggestions for the same type of thing, doesn't have to be wind resistant but can grow in shade. We don't want to get a fence because neighbors on either side of us are fine, yards look nice, but the people behind us...

Yeah, see, Ready, I want trees (and PRIVACY) like yours but I would be so upset if I planted lelands and in 20 years they started dying on me :?

I need something that grows FAST. I like this, http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/WillowHybrid.htm , but it is not an evergreen. Says it's still a good windbreak in winter so I guess it would still be something of a privacy hedge even in winter. :? :?:

Also, I like this one, http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/Privet.htm , but it doesn't say if it's an evergreen? Anybody know?

I think the privet stays green all year. It does grow really fast. It's pretty, with the light green leaves and white tips.
