We are new to Clayton and are trying to find a church. Our Wednesday evenings already have other activities, so any church related activity like choir or youth group would need to be on another day. We are interested in a traditional choir, rather than a praise band. We've already visited a few churches, but just haven't found the right one yet. Any suggestions?
I grew up at Horne Memorial UMC(Methodist) on the corner of 2nd & Church streets. They have traditional worship at 8:30 and 11:00 as well as a praise and worship service at 9:30 (I think), but if you really want traditional and in a small country church, try Elizabeth UMC out on SR1010 towards Smithfield. Great bunch of folks there, too!
We did visit the Horne UMC Church, and I really liked it. It seems they have a wonderful youth program. Unfortunately that youth program meets on Wednesdays, and even though I tried to free up Wednesdays for this, I could not do it. It gets complicated, but Wednesdays are booked. It seems that most churches have gone to contemporary worship with praise bands, which is very spirited and uplifting, but I am keeping my daughter's interest in a traditional choir in mind. I just wonder if something like I am looking for exists....I will look at that Methodist church towards Smithfield. Thanks for the reply.
I agree....love the praise band! Most youth events will be on Wednesday night, gonna be hard to find a church that isnt. Welcome to NC and good luck with your search.
You are really going to be hard pressed to find a church that doesn't schedule important activities on Wednesday night. I can't think of a single one. Sounds like you might have to make a choice between your prior obligations and church on Wednesday.... :cry:
We have been going to Providence Presbyterian down 50 and off 210. It is really an "old-time" country church. They have a great choir and sing all the hymns that most of us grew up hearing. People are super nice there, too. I don't know when they have their programs and they are currently in the search for a new preacher(although I think they have pretty much decided now). DH plays a few instruments and he thinks the pianist and organist are pretty talented; he also loves the choir. I know it is probably a distance for you, though.
Turner Memorial Baptist Church We were in the same situation when we moved here a few years ago. After visiting many, we've settled on Turner Memorial Baptist Church. Everyone is very nice, and the pastor is wonderful. Very warm feeling to the church. Also, we have 2 kids that love it there (aged 5 and 7). check it out. www.tmbc.sonstone.com They do have services on Wed night, but we are unable to attend (too late for the kiddos on a school night).
Elevation UMC, on Elevation Road between Benson and McGees Xroads, has a big youth program and they meet on Sunday nights. In addition they have a traditional choir.
http://www.mid-way.com/ They do have a traditional choir (excellent) and they work hard to keep the music a blend of traditional and praise/contemporary. There is an orchestra but no praise band. Sunday nights they have awanas for the kids. They do have many other activities on Wed nights though (like others said - gonna be hard to find different). It would ba about a 25 min drive to church for you (it is for us too) but we really love the youth programs there (have 4 kids) so we think it's worth it. Check the site out. Well, thanks for the replies! So services are held at Waffle House:lol: I know they are held at a fitness center too. Thanks for the Mid Way Baptist, Providence Presbyterian, Turner Memorial Baptist Church, and the Elizabeth UMC recommendations. They are very different from one another, but look interesting. Mid Way has a great web site. And like was said, the kiddos have to get up awful early for school. I was hoping to sleep in once we moved here, but it turns out the kids leave for the bus even earlier!:-( I found a church that looks interesting while surfing on the net. Anyone familiar with New Beginnings Fellowship out on Fayetteville near Wake Tech? I moved here from living in New Hampshire the last six years; before that Germany. So far I love NC, Clayton, even with the heat. People are very friendly, not so in the NE. And it is beautiful. I love how something is always in bloom; again a big change from a two-month growing season. I think I'm gonna love it here!
I just know they have interesting signs every week beside the road that I read on my way to work... LOL They are not shy of touchy subjects, but that is not a bad thing either!
Have you attended First Baptist on Fayetteville Street in Clayton? Sunday 11:00am service is traditional with a great choir. Great youth group that meets on Sunday and Wednesday nights. All activities for 5th grade and below are on Wednesday night. We currently have a great Interim Pastor, Dr. Roy De Brand. Professor of preaching at Campbell Divinity School. I used to go to Bisquitville every sunday morning right before the church crowds. We'd call it the hethen hour We 'd be all slumming in our street clothes and all the church folks would come in all dressed up. It's not a traditional church, but give C-3 a try. I know alot of people give it a bad rap on here, But the RARE times I go to church, I have really enjoyed it. What part of New Hampshire? MY bother in law has a bunch of land right outside of Plymouth and it is one of the nicest places on earth. I keep swearing I am gonna quit my job and move up there to live off the land
Well ya'll! Thanks for keeping those answers coming. I had already thought to visit MT Zion UMC because their website gives great information that fits what we are looking for. With the suggestions, we will be kept busy the next few weeks looking for our church home. Still have to visit New Beginnings Fellowship because we drove out there this morning and could not find it! That's how you get to know your new neighborhood - driving around.... I moved from Merrimack. We loved it, but I have a feeling that Clayton will be home. The NE is very pretty, but be ready for major bugs from May to September, just the time you want to be outside. Starts with the May flies (or black flies), then mosquitoes, deer flies, horse flies, etc...When I gardened there and it was not too hot I wore a "beekeepers" outfit - really! And that is not unusual to see. So thanks again for all the suggestions for a church. We are looking.
