Used to go there all the time when the previous owner had it. Since he sold it, I have gone there twice. The new owner ruined it.

I've never been, but I'm looking for a cool place to do Karaoke for my b-day on the 13th. The Clubhouse is having a band that night. What's the problem with it- -just bad service or bad people in there?

    MVPs.....

Funny, I work right across the street and have never been in MVPs. None of the people I know that do go there are Hispanic, but there is a Hispanic grocery store, bakery, and club in that shopping center. But there is also an Asian market, an African store, Comic book store, Afro American barber shop/ Salon.

True story - I look like a large white country boy and went into the barber shop for a hair cut once. Well its down @ the end of a long hallway and as I am walking down I hear one of the customers talking to his barber about honkies keepin him from gettin a job, etc. When I rounded the corner and he saw me he bout crapped himself. You could have heard a pin drop when I plopped down in the waiting chair. :) Dont think anyone in there had ever seen a white guy get his hair cut there.

Best dang haircut I ever had. I would highly recommend the place.

This post indicates the wide area that the 4042 Discussion Boards serve. MVP sports bar is in North Raleigh and probably 30 miles from 4042 area.

It's not 30 miles, more like 15 miles. It's in the shopping center at the corner of Atlantic and New Hope, near the UPS hub center. This area is discribed as little Mexico, has a large population of hispanics and in the last week there the fire dept. was called out for 3 car fires:rolleyes: in the parking lot. Now, ask yourself if this is a part of town you want to visit at night.

John has driven the business in the ground. He has driven away the regulars that brought alot of business in there over the years. He has changed the band format to cater more towards the top 40 crowd for the most part. He is never there. Heck, he frequents more of the competitions bars than his own. Bobby was thre EVERY DAY hob-nobbing with his customers. Bobby made you feel like you were welcome. John makes the place feel cold and unfriendly.

Musician or not, he knows nothing about running a bar.

Heard yesterday that he now has to hire a local armed guard on nights when he has music. That means for any karoake night, jam or live band he has to have someone there and pay them $25/hr. Needless to say, he may be bagging all live music except for Friday nights and karoake on Saturdays. Not good for business.

Yup. City of Raleigh already cited him once for not having the guard.

I'm jut curious... you say you look like a large white country boy.... are you in actuality a slim black man? How do you disguise yourself?

I sure wouldn't go period, if they need guards, I don't need to be there.

Actually I think this is one of those laws that goes something like this......

If you have live music, you have to have an armed guard, BTW we provide armed guards or uniformed officers for $25 an hour.

Didn't WRAL do a series on that a while back?

Then again, you probably didn't play some of the shadier places in town. This law was passed by the Raleigh City Council some months back, with much discussion and opposition. Places like Reds(Beach Music club) which has virtually no history of trouble, strongly opposed it and I think the issue was revisited at some point, outcome, I don't recall.

So begins a fairly long article about the ordinance. The link to the N&O story did not work for me, but this article goes on to explain the ordinance pretty much the way I remembered it.
