Okay, all you people talkin Sushi in the random thoughts thread got me wondering about it. I don't think I have ever had it. It's just the idea of raw fish that makes my stomach turn.:? Maybe if I knew a little more about it I'd be willing to test it out. (You first though, serversnapper:mrgreen: ) So...tell me a few things about it. What does it taste like. I imagine a cold, slimy, jelly/rubbery like texture in my mouth with the flavor being like the smell of a fish pond. :? :?: What different kinds are there? Who has the best? How do you know its safe when it's not cooked? I'm not trying to be a smart butt here either. I really want to know more about the topic. Please share and educate me and SS. Oh, and BTW, In my youger days, I did put away some raw oysters so I guess raw fish isn't a big stretch. But that was only after I had put away enough beers not to care. Like I said - long ago. After going through 4 pregnancies and being warned of the dangers of raw oysters and fish during pregnancy, I just have a hard time wanting to try it any longer. Then again, I still venture into Pizza Inn @ 4042 every once in a while without even drinking. Maybe I'm braver than I think.
Thanks Ken! You don't say! I had no idea some sushi was cooked. Now that changes everything. What's your favorite (cooked, that is:-D ) and why?
though descriptions will never compare to actual enjoyment, here is everything you need to know.... http://www.sushifaq.com/ I felt the same way most people stereo-type 'raw-fish'. It's one of those things you just have to have an open mind about, be willing to let your tastebuds enjoy and go with someone that has had it before. You can get it many (hundreds) different ways. 'Tempura' style is a great 'starter sushi'. It's fried (shrimp or many other fish) rolled in the rice. Most important rule of eating sushi is never to eat sushi you can't see being made.
Try an actual sushi bar. Go to the main bar and talk to the sushi chef. He will give you some great tips on how to eat it, what you are eating and what is good. The one at North Hills is really good but around here, I like Kobe (behind starbucks on 70)
The eel sounds good. Now tell me more about the octopus because I once had this broth based soup a long, long time ago. (Okay, now it's coming back to me why I have had the thought of anything sushi blocked out for years.) Anyway, I remember thinking the soup was good but then I put one of the white looking "chunks" from said soup in my mouth. I actually gagged (and I don't do that often). It was like somebody took a football players transparent mouthpiece, melted it into a weird shape and dropped it in my soup. I could NOT chew it. I tried another piece thinking the first was like, maybe just grissle you get in beef at times. No way, it was all the same. I was told it was squid. I've since had calamari (sp?) and I found it better but still too rubbery. Is that the norm? Does it depend on where you get it or how it is cooked? That site is great kt - I'll have to do some reading there before I try it out. Thanks!! See, I'm glad I asked!:-D
Well, if it exists or not, the term certainly fits me! Thanks for the info. Now I feel much better about trying it out.
MMMMmmmmm!! I DO love crabmeat. (Why'd they have to name it a spider roll though - I HATE spiders):-D As for softshell crabs. I got the surprise of my life a few years back. DH and I used to live closer to the NC coast and one Mother's day, he and the kids took me to Beaufort (love that place) so we could have a nice seafood lunch and make a day of it there. I can't remember the name of the place we ate but it was on the water and we were out on the balcony and having a wonderful time together. We had ordered our lunch and were conversing when the waitress came out with a trey full of our food. All I saw was legs hanging out of the nice sandwich I had ordered. I ignorantly ordered a softshell crab pita sandwich thinking it was going to be like a crab salad sandwich or something, you know, where they take the carbmeat OUT of the dang crab before serving). NOT:shock: :? They simply take the crab, cook it whole and slap the sucker (softshell, legs, eyes and ALL) into a pita pocket with some mayo, lettuce and such. I was speechless. I didn't want to say anything and appear like a dumb hick so I decided, Hey, why not try it. DH and I laughed and I tried to get past the dang legs of the thing all the while waiting for the guy from candid camera to pop out just in time to save me. He never did:? . And I never finished the sandwich either. DH said to order something else but by then, I'd lost my appetite. We still laugh about that Mother's day. Can you guess how freaked out the kids were.   Guess it's a local thing. Not for me though!  You've been WARNED people:!:
Same thing happened to me one day, only I was at lunch with the boss. We both ordered the "crab" sandwich. I about croaked when that thing came out with the legs hanging off the sides of the bun. He was as    as I was, both of us tried to act "cool" about it, but eventually busted out laughing. He's a NC native and had never seen that either! It was good for a laugh!
Ummmm....I suddenly feel the urge to check - there will be NO legs hangin' outta this thing, right? :? I mean - "spider roll". I have to ask after my story above.
Geeeesh! Have you ever seen such a thing? Where were you when you got yours? Makes me feel better that a NC native had never seen it either. But yeah, it is good for a laugh. I suppose there must be some folks who like "leggy" soft shell crab sandwiches.:?
Believe it or not, over in Knightdale. Can't remember the name of the restaurant, but it was a BBQ place too. I laugh every time I think of it!
Logans, downtown Raleigh on a Friday. That is the Logans, the plant place, they have that small cafe at the back. On Fridays they usually do crab-cakes until they run out. Theirs are pretty good, I've made the trip over there several times on a Friday for the crabcake sandwich.
Wasnt that the old Knightdale BBQ & Seafood place, it was a restaurant that used to be a garage. They sold the property to CVS? or Walgreens?? They tore down the old restaurant, and rebuilt across the road, just up from the Smithfield BBQ and Lowes Home store.
That sounds like it, Knightdale Seafood & BBQ. I am not at all familiar with Knightdale, we were just over there for a real estate closing, but I remember it being a brick building.
