Okay, many of you know we have 4 kids. Thinking of getting DD an MP3 for either Nov. B-day or Christmas. DH and I want one for us too but with more memory for all our "old" songs as the kids now call our 80s and 90s favs. Also, DS wants a game system REALLY bad. We have put it off as long as we can I think. I was thinking of a used PS2 since my nephew has one and DS loves it. Also, nephew said the PS1 games will work on PS2 as well and they are "dirt cheap" he says. Sooooo....I am NOT going to go to Wal-Mart and spend loads on a super duper, newest thing system for DS. He loves anything Star Wars now so it needs to be able to run some Star Wars games. I'm not going to spend oodles on DD for an MP3 either but I don't know enough about the game systems or MP3s to shop smart for my $$. Have to shop smart with 4 to feed ya know:mrgreen: Please tell me what you know about these topics and what you would suggest. Thanks!!
I am no help whatsoever, DH is the biggest kid around and we have both an xbox and an xbox 360, there are a couple different playstaions hanging around and DS has the Nintendo DS too. Probably looking at getting a Wii for Christmas this year, they do have some really cool games on there. I am not a "gamer" other than the odd computer game, I love Zuma & Pirate Poppers, nice mindless entertainment.
I would suggest going to Game Stop to get all you need for gaming stuff. You can get used game systems as well as games. They dont make PS1 games anymore and the ones that are left, some, not all, will play on PS2. I would sugeest a Xbox 360 or Wii system for your DS. The guys at 'Game Stop' can help you with everything 'game' and they are super. They will even know what 'explicit' stuff is in the games. I have relied on them for years. As for the MP3 player, they are very affordable, even below $50. I have an MP3 player that I love, however my kids have an iPOD Nano, and I wish I had one. Feel free to PM me with specific questions if ya want.
I hate that kids are sitting in front of the TV for HOURS and HOURS and... well HOURS! Kick their tail outside. for some "entertainment"
I agree! That's why we have put off getting a gaming system for so long. But, even when we do, we will limit the time spent on it. I make SURE all of my kids spend lots of time outside. I limit TV time and it's often only educational shows then. Homeschooling often allows the younger kids to finish all of their work by early afternoon (because I, the teacher, don't have to correct the discipline problems of 25 other kids and mine KNOW they better listen), so, my kids often get extra outside time and they love it. They beg me to go outside. It's a great motivator to get them to finish their schoolwork and chores for the day. Yep! Kids NEED fresh air and sunshine and space to run and play with friends!
I would give the PS3 twn thumbs up plus it has a built in BlueRay player.....You get High Def and an mp3 player.
I totally disagree. I love my iPod. I have had in for 4 years now. I have a 1000 song capacity. I use it in my truck, my car...where ever I go. I bought my oldest son the iPod Video and he takes it every single place we go. He can download movies also. But hey. That is just my opinion. I can use WInamp with my iPod.
Yes. You are right. The important thing is to be comfortable with the investment. You get what you pay for.
HG- totally agree with you...MOST kids spend way too much time on the gaming systems. I only allow an hour (maybe two if there is no fussing) on the weekends ONLY. That thing or the TV for that matter, DOES NOTcome on for the kiddo's during the school week. SS- I agree. the ipod Nano ROCKS. There is nothing bad to say about it. Nothing. I have had ZERO problems with itunes (or any of the other places I use to get music for it). iTunes is so kid friendly too, which is what I like so much, it clearly shows songs that are 'explicit' and 'clean'.
I want a dockable MP3 player with a dock and speakers for Christmas, so if anyone happens to see any good deals, let a sister know, lol...
Okay, this info really helped me think better about my needs here. Thank you very much! Most of my music will come from our current cd collection (not sure how I will get it on the mp3), though I would love to learn how to get my favorites online also.I'd love advice on where to go and how to go about this - I'm clueless on the subject. Remember, I spend most of my day answering language, math, science and history questions from 4 different grade levels. I just have not had time to get out there and learn about these things yet. But, that's what's so great about 4042, you guys are always willing to help out.:-D I'd like the one DH and I use to hold maybe up to 500 songs if we can get that for a good price. The one for DD can hold less. I figure we will get her one and us one, all learn how to use them and get a better idea of what we like best, then, if she outgrows hers, we can give hers to the next DD down the line and give oldest DD ours and get us one with more memory. Make sense? Now, how will I get the music libraries transferred if I do that?? Oh, and I don't give a flip about what the namebrand is. I just want the best quality and the most memory for the best price I can find. Hmmmm...would you buy something like this used off of ebay? Wonder if I should check that out. Another question. I'm looking at buying a used PS2 for DS on ebay. What's a good price on one. I did go to a gamestop and they were very helpful. I might buy there but thought I'd see what ebay has first. Any ideas on what "bells and whistles" for PS2 will be attractive to an 8yo boy? Stuff I might like to watch for while scanning the ebay auctions for the PS2 itself?
Forgot to say that I really don't need the mp3 to play movies and such. I just want the thing to be a place I can store and play all my favorite songs. Too much more and I won't have time to learn to work it so it's a waste.
Gamestop in Garner (White Oak shopping center) has an Xbox 360 bundle on sale right now. I know you get like two controllers, a ton of memory, and a couple of really awesome games all for $349. Pricey yes, but from what I understand (and the open mouth on my other half), its a bargain!
