I still disagree with all of you on the point of the teacher earning respect. My father taught me to respect adults, which included teachers. I have passed that onto my daughter and with all due respect to the ones who state that one has to earn it, please do not complain if a child, teenager, whomever gets rude with you, you may not have earned his/hers respect.

We must come from two completely different worlds. Sure my daughter knows if a person is doing something wrong but in an elementary school any child...let me state that again...any child would be afraid if they saw an adult arrested and put in handcuffs. Needless to say, this one was a teacher! Our sheriff can find a better use of the cameras, in my humble opinion. If my child had been at that school I would have given him an ear full.

We don't know if she is guilty or not it is just the fact that the children should not be subjected to it. I don't keep mine in a bubble nor do I let her run around at all times of the night and morning. We have found a compromise and as I stated earlier, I am crossing my fingers that I can trust her. And, she knows that if she disrespects an adult she will catch it from me. Go ahead let the adults "earn" your child's respect before they give it...that's when the circus starts, ladies!

And, for those of you who don't remember let me remind you that we even had a time when gentlemen would hold the door open for a lady. In today's world my father still tries to do it but most of the time he slams it on them because common courtesy is not given. That may be the main thing I miss from when I was younger.

I don't remember ever seeing a teacher or anyone else arrested at a school.

My husband opens the door for me.
He is a true gentleman. He would do anything for me. Ask anyone here who has met me. In return, I would do ANYTHING for him.

my son and dh still hold the door for others, and it is not slammed on anyone when it is not appreciated, you just take it for what it is, someone with no manners..

but I dont think you teach your dd to respect everyone I think you teach her to give them the chance to earn it.. in other words, show respect to them and they show respect toward you.. but when it is not shown in return then all respect is lost...

Grace, my child IS taught to respect adults, as I'm sure most of the parents on here do. You don't have the market cornered on that, I am sure. The point you are missing is this: Adults can not be blindly trusted simply because they are in positions of authority. That is asking for trouble. The fact that a teacher has been arrested for suspicion of whatever, just reinforces that they are all human, subject to the same demons everyone else is. Kids need to know this. I had a teacher in HS who was having an affair with one of the students in my own class, common knowledge, did I respect her less as a person? Absolutely! Did I respect her position, and still do the work required of me to pass her class, you bet your butt!

You and others may say that no children were around but we don't really know do we? Kids look out windows and talk to one another. When 9/11 happened and my daughter was at school the children were not told, only the teachers. All of the children knew within an hour. Please understand that whether one wants to believe those kids did not see or hear anything is one thing but I would bet at least one child saw something and I find it inappropriate.

Glad to hear we still have gentlemen around.

I understand the statement about earning respect but that goes both ways. In today's world we, as the adults, must teach the younger generation to respect others. That does not mean to get in a car with them, or go for a walk with a stranger, it means to RESPECT. What part of that do you not understand?

    Grace,

There were no children around. period.

If for no other reason to believe that, there are no mother's on this board screaming for vengeance that their kids saw it.

The children had no idea what was going on. I promise.

So exactly what would you have had the Sheriff do instead, since you didn't respond to anyone's direct question on that, or have you not bothered to read the entire thread before posting that the Sheriff made a mistake? I'm assuming you don't know any more about the situation than the rest of us. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I teach my child respect, as I teach him that adults screw up and make mistakes.. and if a child saw oh well.. I have to screen freakin cartoons now days because of what is on them.. tell me why I have to do that, oh yeah because somewhere along the way someone thought it was funny to show violence, sex, or drugs in my childs cartoons.. But god forbid we let them watch Mary Poppin or the Wizard of Oz because of the drug reference and witches in them... Get over it honey... Suck it up and talk to your kids about what is going on in our world today and let them know what kind of people are in this world, if not when they get out from under you they are in for one hell of a ride.... I am sure most elementary school age kids could tell us all a few things that they learn from there friends and other teachers...
