Anybody else see this? A car flew past my hubby on 40 at darted off the exit onto Hwy 42 with 3 SHP's after him. Anyone know how it ended?

One thing I'd like to throw in here is a circumstance I saw unfold the other day on Interstate 40 south of the Hwy. 42 interchange about 2:00 P.M. State Trooper had apparently clocked somebody going too fast and as the cluster of vehicles I was in passed, he was turning around at the Cornwallis Rd. (I think) overpass. Anyway, I was driving 70-75 mph and didn't slow down any further than that. I did, however, hear my V1 radar detector going off prior to seeing the trooper and moved over to the right lane. By this time he had already activated his lights and he was marked but did not have a light-bar...just the take down lights.

He didn't even catch up with me until about .5 mile before the NC42 exit. Other traffic would simply not get out of his way!! Don't people even look in their mirrors anymore? You've got a two-ton Crown Victoria with headlights and blue lights flashing sitting directly in your rearview and are oblivious to his presence.

Now I speed some. I don't deny that, but I consider myself a safe driver and I try my very best to pay attention...even when I'm using my cell phone briefly. The road comes first above any other distractions. Remember to adjust and check those mirrors. It shouldn't have taken that Trooper 3.5 miles to run down that motorists he was trying to stop.

Another thing that has happened over the weekend. Saturday, we were on our way to a baseball tourniment and we hopped on 40 from exit 319. There was construction going on (on 40 ) near 4042. It was turning into one lane so all the cars had to be on the right lane. Well you had some cars still driving on the left lane so they can beat alot of cars that was already on the right lane and cut in.

This was going on for a lil while until my DH noticed that there was a car on the left lane driving really slow and preventing other cars to pass (driving the left lane). I know the person was trying to make a point but dang....you can't being doing that....can cause an accident or p*ss someone off.

    It was crazy

    Ro,
When I get in the line of a lane moving from 3 to 2, or 2 to 1, it really angers me that so many think their time is so much more valuable than mine, so they zip along to the front, and then try to get in line. I hated it in lunch line in elementary school, and I still do here. When I see people that have passed me, hoping to be allowed in, I refuse to reward their bad manners. I continue to operate my vehicle in a safe manner, and laugh as they hang in there, with blinker on, and getting no where.

hatteras, i hate that too, but it's not just bad manners. it's stupid, and it slows everybody down even more. merge early and get it over with and traffic can flow smoothly. speed down the left lane and cause everyone to slam on brakes while you merge at the last second, and everyone gets slowed down even more and the whole merge process takes even longer

waiting to merge until traffic is flowing smoothly is smart. if everyone is trying to jam themselves in line at the last second the whole process just goes slower. that guy may not have been so much making a point as waiting for traffic to start to move instead of jamming himself into a line of stopped cars at the last second. i do it too. and it shouldn't cause an accident unless someone is driving like a jerk and speeding along in that left lane trying to pass every last car before finally diving in line causing everyone behind them to slam on brakes. i could care less if it ****es someone behind me off. if they're ****ed, it's because they're one of the speedies trying to get an advantage of just one more car....just get in line. everybody's got to wait. we'll all wait less if you just play along

Well it was on Wral last night that the guy was apprehended in Garner after reaching 140+ mph....I thought dear hubby was exaggerating when he said the guy was going 150.

On the lane closure thing...the sign they had up said that the right lane was closed ahead but it was actually the left so i too was in the wrong lane on Sat. but I wasn't trying to beat everyone out....the first lane drop ahead sign showed the right closed

Which is more dangerous, the trooper weaving around cars for 3.5 miles then slamming on brakes on I40 to pull someone over ...or someone driving 11 miles over the speed limit staying with traffic and keeping a safe distance? We should only have tickets for genuine reckless driving, not speeding.

Yeh, I can see where speeding could not be considered reckless driving. I am also sure that the Troopers are trained to drive a little better than the average driver to help them weave in and out of traffic because no one is paying attention.

As usual, I find this to be an ignorant train of thought, but let's stop and ask some of these people.

I've heard that speed kills. I don't doubt this, and I'm no accident expert, but I have a strong suspicion that inaccurate steering has as much to do with it as speeding. Delayed braking may also be involved somehow. Its probably not even the speed that kills, but the sudden stop caused by the inaccurate steering towards immobile objects ...combined with delayed braking.

Maybe we should just reduce the speed limit so low that inaccurate steering and delayed braking don't matter and we can all bump into each other as much as we want and not get hurt.

I'm guilty of making others play fair. I have in the past, if traffic merges from two lanes to one from the right to the left, and I see some butthead trynna fly up past ten cars to slip in before it's too late, I drive on the center line. No one goes to the left and no one slides through on the right. And when I lip read them calling me a ****ing Enlightened person I just smile and wave. I'd rather **** them off than risk rear-ending them or some one else when they slip in into too small a space and three people ahead of me nail their brakes. Nip it in the bud.

But when they come up from the left on a merge to right, I just close the gap. Maybe that's a left brain/right brain thing.

Just thinking out loud here, but don't higher speeds reduce your ability to control the vehicle if you have to make a sudden stop or run off the road to avoid that other car? At least that's what my dad always told me, the higher the speed the less control if something were to happen. Just thinking :?:

Your dad was absolutely right but individuals that think speeding is OK do not want to hear logical facts.

Ken, you say your belief...Go to NTSA and you will see that the facts back your beliefs...The higher the speed the higher the percentages go up for fatality wrecks.

Now on to your theory of writing speeding tckets. Do you know that most cops give speeders 15 over the spped limit before they even stop them? Virginia may be different but if you were going over the speed limit then take responsibility. You chose to speed. I see why you have sour grapes towards speeding tickets. Maybe instead of trying to rationalize your speeding ticket you take a look at your speed. What is above the posted speed limit? Take responsibility and quit trying to throw the blame on someone else. You got caught!

All I am saying is that you got a ticket for speeding. Were you speeding? I don't care ifyou were in a group of cars, even if they were speeding. Don't justify your speeding just because everyone else was and then complain because you got caught. If you choose to speed be ready to pay the ticket. You got caught and they didn't, sorry.

Principle of VA laws? What, you speed you get a ticket? I am sure it is not saying that if you go the speed limit you get a ticket.

How do we ever as a society raise children to be held responsible when everytime we get in trouble it is not fair because we got caught? Geeze!

OK, you are right based on innocent until proven guilty. But like you have been doing, you are accusing that this cop has no ethics and fudged your ticket but you sit right here and tell me that you were not even looking at the "speedo". Wow, you just displayed your character right there Mr. Ken. And by the way, I am not naive enough to know that there are some bad apples out there but group all cops like you just did is just ignorant. By the way, good luck with your trial. Make sure you tell the judge that you weren't looking at the "speedo". That should help your case or are you going to commit purjery?

It is funny that I supported you on the speeding. I was backing your post up with facts from NTSA. I am sorry if you can't read. Do I look at my "speed" all of the time? No, but I take responsibility when I get caught. I know how radar works and I am sorry bud, but more than likely you were actually going faster than what your ticket indicates.

Trust me on one thing, I am not a fan of yours and talking about getting a life. Look at your number of posts. Do you do anything but post on a discussion board? BORING! Bye-bye
