Ok, Since we are still fairly new to the area and don't eat out alot, I need everyone's help. I have family coming into the area in a few weeks to visit and at my stepdad's request I need to find a gool ole country mom and pop barbeque restraunt. Any suggestions??
YES, Stepehnsons! Mmmmmmm! No need to drive to S'field, WilsTon or Goldsbooooro. Stepehnsons is even better at Lunch! Thurs is Chicken Pastry Day (Lunch time) Mmmmmmmmm!!!
It is YUMMY! Those others are good too, but for in the 40/42 area, there is no other....and you can get family style....they'll keep bringing it till your guts pop open.....so yummy!!!
Forget what all of these people are saying. Absolutely every bit. There is only one place in N.C. that has the best and I mean absolute best Bar-b-que. Old time barbeque. Hillsboro street Raleigh. www.oletimebarbecue.com His place seats about 15. Tightly. But it will take 20 to 50 minute wait to get in the door. He does catering. I love it!!! 6309 Hillsborough Street Raleigh, NC 27606-1148 Hours: Mon-Thu 6:00am- 8:00pm Fri 6:00am- 9:00pm Sat 6:00am- 2:00pm Closed Sun. Since you are fairly new to the area, you might need a primer on "Eastern NC Barbecue" versus all the other barbecue in the world, pretty much. When NC natives talk about "eastern" vs. "western" they don't mean U.S., they mean NC - western style has BBQ sauce more like what you find in other parts of the country, whereas eastern has a vinegar based sauce, and they accuse the rest of us of putting ketchup on our barbecue! I used to think western was Texas style, barbecued beef, but here "barbecue" means pork, anything else will include the meat (e.g.: "barbecued chicken" or a church fundraiser might be a chicken barbecue) but if they just say barbecue, that is pig for sure! Eastern NC barbecue is an acquired taste. You might want to try out a few of the more popular barbecue places before they get here. Bill's Barbecue in Wilson is an experience, and the food is good. Wilbur's in Goldsboro is great, and closer to here, Holt Lake or White Swan (the original, not necessarily one of the franchises - some of them are better than others). I have lived here over 20 years, and I really have grown to like Eastern NC 'Q, but if you're expecting some other kind it can be a surprise when you first taste it.
You might also want to try Holy Smokes up on Tyron Rd. in Garner. You can get eastern, western, brisket, ribs, all sorts of real smoked on the property bbq. Craig
are you serious... we got large quantities of their stuff a while back for a customer appreciation thing we were doing here at my office.... the bbq was dried out and over chopped.. it looked like mush. The fried chicken all looked burnt and tasted like crap.... the best thing they had was the slaw. That was the first time we used them, and it surely will be the last. We'll stick to BBQ Lodge (out on Capital @ Mini-City) for our big quantity company functions, and at a reasonable price.
Another vote for Stephenson's. Whenever my Aunt comes home to visit from Arizona where she now lives, she always has to go to Stephenson's.
If you like your Bar-B-Que greasy and fat!!! Another vote for Stephenson's...less fat than other Eastern NC Bar-B-Que, because they just use the shoulders instead of the whole hog.
Well.. his loss.. like I said, that was the first time we used them, and the last. My salesperson who organized the event was moritified the food was so terrible, especially coming from such a well recommended hole-in-the-wall.
Born & raised in NC here....and have always been more partial to western bbq. Having said that, around here, I go to Stephenson's for pork bbq eastern NC-style. ...and, SS, that's a bad way to do business if he indeed doesn't like Tassy's company... Frogger
Dang you gals are to literal. I like the BBQ. So do thousands of others. But if Jimmy isn't cooking you are not getting the real deal.
