Raleigh — U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement announced Tuesday that 93 foreign nationals now face federal criminal charges or deportation as part of Operation Community Shield, a nationwide effort to combat violent street gang activity.

Agents and officers arrested 50 gang members and their associates in the Raleigh area and 43 in Winston-Salem. The arrests were part of a multi-city enforcement operation over the summer to dismantle the criminal organizations across the country.

ICE Assistant Secretary Julie L. Myers announced Tuesday that the organization has arrested 1,313 gang members, gang associates and illegal aliens across the country since June.

"Violent foreign-born gang members and their associates have more than worn out their welcome, and to them I have one message: good riddance," Myers said.

Authorities said the foreign nationals are linked to nearly 20 different street gangs, including MS-13, Surenos 13 and Brown Pride.

    yikes...

I know gangs are everywhere but I didn't realize Raleigh had such a big problem with them. Are there any other areas that have big gang problems that I need to be aware of?

thanks. I heard that Smithfield was getting bad is that true? I've been there a couple of times and it seemed nice enough to me. Then again all I have to compare anything to is Miami. You want to talk gang problem....

Gangs are everywhere. My daughter pointed out the gang painting on Wendy's in Clayton one night and she even knew which gang it came from. I'll get jumped on for this but here goes...gangs have been around forever. If one has seen the play or movie Grease it was back in the 40's, the thing that has changed...chains and knives to guns!

You talkin' bout West Side Story? I love that move/play ...thingy...

My oldest is about to turn 9 so we haven't had any gang related conversations yet... But we did take my 14 yo niece to the carnival in town this year. She goes to Cornith Holders... I was amazed! She pointed out several "kids" there that were into the gang scene ... sad. :-(

Ugh! I could smell the generation gap a mile away that day!

I was using Grease as an example. Do you really think the drug trade has changed or does the increase in population have something to do with it? Wonder what the comparison percentage is? Parents used to tell kids to stay away from people who rode motorcycles and today some of the wealthiest people in the world ride them. I told my daughter if she was in trouble and saw some bikers to head over to them and let them know what was going on because they would help her. I take her to a lot of rock and roll concerts and of course with ZZ Top, Fogerty and Hagar come the bikers. They have been wonderful with her.

What one person calls a gang may be another person's group of friends. I know that I am stretching it on that one, but you should get the point.

I admit I was a little confused at first about the grease and west side story analogy (MIL from he%% has been here for 4 days--need I say more?) but you do have a good point. I re-read your post and this one and it does make sense. So I gotta give you a thumbs up!

No, I was wanting information and making a point that gangs have been around for a long time. Since you seem to know the history of this let me ask some questions.

First, was is ice? Second, I was under the impression that gangs did protect their own territory, even the ones today. I never saw a gang when I went to school so why do we see them today? Is it because of the money? My daughter and her friends tell me that they can spot a gang member due to the way they dress or the tatoo.

I know gangs today use more violence but I really don't understand why.

    Thanks,
    Grace

Glad to be of help. It seems that Ken knows the most so I have asked him some questions and he is very good at responding. Keep watching your Thread for his response.

When I lived in San Francisco I would do volunteer work and I had two instances that I have never forgotten.

At Christmas time I would volunteer to go with a police officer and another citizen to deliver toys to the underprivileged. For some reason all three of us wound up together year after year. Anyhow, people would help us load toys and other items into boxes and we would label them with the apartment number. Needless to say, my story below was my last year to do this one.

We would get the boxes loaded into a covered truck and the police officer would drive, I would sit beside him and a friend of mine who was a huge black guy would sit next to the passenger door. They always felt that it was safer that way...I know they both wanted to be next to me (tee hee).

We pulled up and parked outside a huge apartment building in Oakland, California. Remember, we are not in Kansas anymore! These buildings are huge and form a square with a court yard in the center. This particular year the two men told me to stay in the truck because the gang activity was getting bad in this area and they didn't need to worry about me. They stated that they would be back after telling each family to come to the truck. OMG...as soon as they were out of site people came from everywhere and were hollering and telling me to open the doors. Back then I was 90 pounds wet. When they noticed that I would not open the doors they started to rock the truck. I thought I was going to pee on myself. The police officer and my friend came running and those people started running in all directions. When I finally allowed them to open the door I was ****ed. By that time I realized that people's Christmas' were getting ruined by these people.

After they passed out the items and we were driving over the Bay Bridge both gentlemen told me that the gangs had taken over that area. They told me that some people were stationed on the roofs, people were not allowed to lock their doors so that these people could run through if needed and they had lookouts everywhere. I never noticed anything because before I could look around I was surrounded. So, yes I do understand some of what you are saying.

The second time was when I volunteered to ride with a police officer, once again in Oakland, for Halloween. The thought was that if the police were out in force children could actually trick or treat. This one was wonderful. Parents and children came up to the car thanking us and trying to give us items. Once again I cried but for a different reason.

What do you think can be done to let them know that we mean business? I guess what I am saying is, I know they are not going away but we don't want the violence and what comes with it. When I was a teen it was pot, acid, mescaline, speed and heroin. All this other stuff is Greek to me. I try to stay on top of things for my daughter's sake but geez they have so many things today can anybody keep up?

Ken have you ever been a gang member? Just wondering not being a smart butt. If you would rather not answer I understand . Its just you know alot about them and I was wondering if it is first hand. I have led a very sheltered life I guess and never met a gang or ex gang member except one who I think he is but not sure everytime I ask he says " your so cute" and I never get a straight answer.

    Gangs, etc...

I agree with Ken on this one, ESPECIALLY the part about being armed. There is a reason people dont knock over gun stores, police stations, etc. Cause they are afraid of getting shot. If you and I are neighbors and they look @ your car with peace, love, flowers and puppy dogs stickers all over it, or my car with NRA, pro gun, etc stickers on it, who's house you think they are going to rob? Dont stand around and be a victim, I sure as heck wont.

Plus, penalties need to be stiffer for repeat offenders. For example one of the guys in the WRAL story was getting deported for the 3rd time. Um, hello, ya think he's not just going to come back? Slap his rear in jail for 20 years and be done with him. Or tell him yeah, go ahead and cross the border and you'll be shot on site.
