    Gave this some thought...

Yes, I am new to the disscussion board - but felt the need to chime in.
I have to agree with the masses - the greatest happiness of doing a good deed is from knowing that you did it. When you boast of your efforts - you really make others view your deed as no longer good - but a means to draw attention to yourself. Mnredsky, I think you had good intentions with the thread you were trying to create, but you went about it in the wrong way and came across as boasting. Then you proceed to dig yourself further in a hole when you claim not to be judgemental and criticize others on this site for giving what you feel is harsh opinion or criticism. However, I read your thread on the Pizza Inn manager and think you are "the pot calling the kettle black." Open forums are for opinions, but you - yourself delt out a personal attack. I just think maybe you should give better thought as to what you are trying to say and how it may come across before you send it out there. Just trying to give you friendly advice for you to apply in your future communications.

To my surprise, which it really shouldn't have, this thread has been twisted into something it was not intended to be. For all of those who shared your wonderful volunteer experiences thank you and keep on volunteering!

I think this song by the late Glen Payne incorporates a good "volunteerism spirit".

mnredsky: I took no offense at your initial post. The places you mentioned came across, to me, as just personal examples that you would have told me had I asked for suggestions to do some volunteering.

Your life affords you the opportunity to volunteer with a variety of groups.

I say, Praise the Lord, as long as you're not stretching yourself too thin and neglecting other areas of your life/family that need you more. But you are the judge of that.

Posts often go in a different direction than we intend, but that seems to be the nature of a public board such as this, and it's something we all have to contend with.

We also lose some context in a post since we cannot see each other and interact personally.

I am not going to list all my volunteer activities but I will say that there is currently a big need for volunteers for Meals on Wheels in Clayton. I have mentioned this on many occasions on this discussion board. I am not sure that anyone has ever volunteered. This is a rewarding volunteer activity. It takes me about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the time I leave my house, pick up the meals at the Senior Center and deliver 14 meals to seniors. Many of my clients do not see anyone else during the day but me. However I feel better that the clients after delivering the meal, checking to make sure they are OK and having a very short conversation with them. I deliver the meals every Friday. We have 4 routes. They need regular volunteers and substitutes that they can call on when our regular volunteers are unable to deliver the meals.
If you can help, please call Pam Maynard at the Senior Center. 553-5642.

Every thing people do is based on motivation. And motivation is based in the benefit the "doer" receives from the action. The higher the benefit for the "doer"...the more motivation.

Doesn't mean that being motivated to volunteer because you receive a benefit from it is good or bad...it's just the way people are.

Good grief! Again with the Pizza Inn. How many user names do you have football, er....Ummmm, I mean (hold on - going to look at your newest username again - okay, there it is), I mean....UR2L8:?:

Not very "God Loving" of you to tell MNREDSKY she is the "pot calling the kettle black" now is it??

My advice, (take it or leave it)...spend less time creating new user names on here so you can hide and attack those who have spoken the truth and MORE time in the kitchen or watching customer service training dvds or anger management dvds;)

I'm kindof surprised Clif or Ken haven't smoked you out on this yet:lol:

  16. Okay this is long and I apologize for that but PLEASE BEAR WITH ME because I have some things to say that [1] I hope are taken in the good spirit they are offered and [2] I'd like to see the participants in this thread (as well as all other threads) to stop the personal attacks on each other and contribute positive things to be an inspiration for all concerned. And before I start, please know that I will not take offense to anything anyone has to say in response to this long post of mine -- everyone is ENTITLED to their own views. And I also will not respond to any personal attacks for expressing my own views herein. There is a fair way to discuss things and that is NOT to personally attack someone but to engage in reasonable discourse ok? While everyone is entitled to their own views, it isn't acceptable to personally attack others for doing so -- I will not respond to posts that disrespect me or my right to express myself. So with that said and out of the way.....

Clif, I am not singling you out for your (above) post that quotes bible verses. Quite the contrary, I think it was a very valid contribution you made. And please know that I do not see myself as any kind of bible scholar, but when reading the verses you cited [Matt 6:1-4], here is how I see them (and everyone sees things differently) so please indulge me ok? I get the sense that J.C. was pointing out the corruption he saw occurring in the Jewish TEMPLE (synagogues were not houses of worship at that time like they are today; they were schools of learning the law of Torah). He was condemning how the money changers and Pharisees and Scribes promoted their own materialistic values above the needs of the poor who were many (the multitudes). The poor and downtrodden were marginalized by the upper echelons (Pharisees, Scribes, San Hedrin, etc.) at that time and treated like trash -- and the poor and downtrodden were hungry for the hope and salvation that J.C. offered. And what better way for J.C. to point out that it was the Pharisees and Scribes who were responsible for corrupting all of Jewish society by their hypocrisy -- they insisted that ALL the Jews do and act as they were told and that their way of interpreting the "law" was the only option for everyone to abide by. The Pharisees and Scribes were committed to the LETTER of the "law" and J.C. focused on the SPIRIT of the law (which He came to "fulfill").

While I was looking up the verses you cited [Matt 6:1-4], I noticed some other verses that jumped out at me [Matt 5:14-20] and I would like to share them here...

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets; I am come not to destroy but to fulfill. Verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or tittle shall in no way pass from the law until all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men to do so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But whosoever shall do and teach them the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you that except your self-righteousness exceeds the self-righteousness of the Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

The passages that you cite [Matt 6:1-4] refer to actual money ("alms") that the JEWS in those days would place in the "tzedakah" (which is Hebrew for boxes or containers that the Jews deposited their money for tithing to the poor as well as to the Levite Priests charged with maintaining the Jewish Temple). And these Pharisees and Scribes would do their tithing in a boastful manner because of their conceited belief that they were the only ones good enough to get into the Kingdom of Heaven. None of this has anything to do with "good works" that ALL JEWS are charged with performing for others. The Jews (then and now) believe, as part of their doctrine, that it is their GOOD WORKS ALONE that will get them into Heaven -- as opposed to the Christian doctrine which holds that it is GRACE BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST (and all who accept Him as Savior) that will get them into Heaven and NOT just good works alone.

I certainly am NOT an expert and I certainly am NOT trying to show off here ok? The reason I share my thoughts herein about biblical interpretation (and we all do it) is based on the past 10 years of studying Judaism and the insights that doing so has given me. I have acquired a basic understanding of how the Jews thought about things back then in those days as well as how the Jews think about things in today's day and age. We need to remember that Jesus was a JEW -- He thought like a Jew, acted like a Jew and observed ALL of the rituals and traditions of how a JEWISH MAN would in those days. Jesus did not think in Christian terms (Paul of Tarsus is the one responsible for giving "birth" to the religion of Christianity based on his adoration and his own "personal understanding" of what HE THOUGHT Jesus wanted us to think and do). Jesus traveled around with his disciples and they each PERFORMED GOOD WORKS IN FULL SIGHT OF THE PUBLIC and this miraculous "volunteerism" Jesus performed certainly was not something that even HE considered boastful, or else HE would not be doing them for others to witness. I am sure there are others in this forum who have a different understanding, but this is just my own understanding of it based on the logic of the evidence presented.

Clif, I certainly admire your passion in sharing what you believe is the "right way" for people to behave when it comes to giving (money) and/or volunteering (time), but the two are mutually exclusive. Here is the logic that I see: If volunteering "time" is to be considered a shameful thing for Christians to do, then ALL of the Christian organizations worldwide (such as missionaries, or those who feed the homeless, or witness to prison inmates, build schools and churches for poor communities, etc.) would also be considered boastful and not worthy, by your own definition and judgment. Clif, I think you are a good person and are passionate about your religious views, but I simply cannot believe that you would condemn these honorable organizations and the people in them who "volunteer their TIME doing good works for others". Clif, when you chide those of us who volunteer our time for being boastful, I feel that your intentions for doing so are based on your own personal standards of conduct. By the same token, I also feel that when mnredsky started this thread, that the intention behind it was also based on his/her own personal standards of conduct. And therefore I believe that BOTH of you meant well. And I also feel that each of you may have gone about presenting your views in a manner that is beneath both of you. You are both capable of better things and I know you both know that too.

When the two of you went into attack mode, it created a domino effect and split the good people on this forum into two camps: those who feel that merely discussing their volunteerism is NOT being boastful -- and those who DO. I believe in the inherent goodness of all people and feel that, deep down inside, ALL of us here in this forum have good intentions which end up getting a little heated at times because of our individual passions. Depending upon the intention of the each individual, passion can be a positive force or a destructive one -- and I feel the latter is beneath us all as well.

I would like to see both of you (and the rest of all of us in this forum) find some common ground on this issue because it would be less divisive and would go a long way to foster more good will among all of us. Whether it is boasted about or kept to one's self, any good deed that is done will ALWAYS serve to benefit the recipient of the goodness regardless of who is doing the giving or boasting or whatever. As He started out in Matt 5:14-20, Jesus himself declared "ALL OF US HERE ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD" and we can choose to let our light shine out to benefit and inspire others....or not. He gives us our options -- to choose to shine or not -- and only HE has the authority to judge our hearts and minds at the end of our days.

I too have said things in my past that I am not proud of and doing so was a reflection on ME and MY own poor taste and had nothing at all to do with the person on the receiving end of my own tripe. But should I dwell in the shame of my own past? Or try to move forward and try to temper myself and continue to learn how to better manage my words? I ask this because I have seen HORRIBLE things that people say to each other in this forum. HORRIBLE! But in spite of that, I choose to believe that we are ALL capable of bigger and better things simply because I know that I too am capable of bigger and better things. If I, of all lowly people, can do it, so can the goodness and mercy in all of you.

To the members of this forum who create new identities/profiles and those who are suspicious of their motives: What does it matter? Aren't all voices and opinions, in whatever manner they are expressed and whoever is expressing them, just variations being repeated of different themes? Perhaps those who create new identities do so because they feel misunderstood or are not being heard? Or even perhaps some have no intention of playing fair and if that is the case, engaging them only urges them to continue not playing fair. When someone attacks and calls you stupid or idiotic or whatever, it is a direct reflection on THEM, so for goodness sake everyone -- please ignore those who attack you -- and please people don't attack others like that because doing so shows YOU in a horrible light. Let YOUR light shine BRIGHTLY okay? PLEASE!!! I am begging!

Also to those who volunteer their time to help animals (in distress or whatever) and to those who chide them for doing so: Don't you think that God created all creatures, both great and small, not only because He saw fit to do so, but because these creatures ALSO were of consummate benefit for humankind? (Birds spread seeds to grow new plants; dogs provide symbiotic companionship, etc.) Those who the Creator has blessed with the passion to care for these creatures (as well as the environment that benefits us) are to be considered NO LESS valuable than those who were blessed with the passion to help PEOPLE! Did He not create us to take care of each other as well as the rest of His creation? And don't we show how worshipful we are of Him when we volunteer our time to take care of the creatures and Earth that He gave us?

Okay look, to Clif and to mnredsky and to everyone -- PLEASE let us ALL decide to find some common ground TOGETHER! I am not trying to shame people into being respectful to others...I AM BEGGING! Arguing and sniping at each other wastes precious time that could be better spent DOING good deeds for others, regardless of who considers it boastful or not. And with that said, I too have wasted enough of all of your time. Thank you so much for listening.

Respectfully submitted in good spirit, and in my abiding faith in the goodness and mercy of everyone here on this forum.

    Abundant Blessings and Shalom!
