Anyone know the location of a sweet potato field that has been opened for anyone to dig for leftovers?

Hey, I did what I could. You're welcome anyway.

A friend told me one time that her husband does not allow people to enter his fields to get the leftovers. That takes money out of his pocket.

That may be true but for years other farmers have allowed individuals to come and dig the fields after they have gotten the larger ones out. Otherwise they are just going to rot in the fields.
Has anone heard of any fields that are open to the public?

A farmer lives right behind our neighborhood, and he told us that once their trucks left the field, anyone could come and get what they want. They are done, and won't be coming back to get more sweet potatoes. My children and I have been in several fields the past 2 years and we were in 3 different ones this year. Try 50/42, across from the new Lowes shopping center. Also, on hwy 50 towards Benson, at the corner of Stephenson Rd. There is a cinder block building there, it is Lee's Hair Salon. Behind that building is a field. We were just there the other day.

It is time to revive this thread. If anyone knows of a farmer that has opened his field for the public, please post location and driving directions.

The farmer that owns the fields at the intersection of Ten-ten and Old Stage used to let people gather leftover potatoes. That may be a good one to try.

It's called gleaning. I'm a city girl but I hear it's pretty popular. I know of several ladies where I work that do this. They have done it for generations in JoCo.

Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest.

I ran across this site about NC Yam Jam. It's a charity event where you glean to help feed the hungry. Maybe you could figure out where to glean from this site. http://endhunger.org/nc_yam_jam.htm

yes I have bought boxes of sweet potatoes directly from local farmers and from the farmers market. We also enjoy taking the grandkids to dig for sweet potatoes. Also several friends have asked about open fields. Carry on "dude"! lmao

Its a very small price to pay for friendship and goodwill toward your community. The money he saves is not worth the ill will he sows. Those same friends could help you out of a jam someday.

What is the big deal. No sense in letting them rot in the field! If the farmer gave permission, what not go and get the leftovers?

Gleaning makes a nice project for church youth groups.
