I posted this in the Discussion forum before I realized this might be the better place. I thought someone on here said they place homeless birds from time to time but coudn't find the thread that said who. I would be interested in talking to you.
Careful Kaci, you know if I get more birds, you will be the first person I call when I am trying to find new homes!!!
I no longer do it for the time being, but let me know if you want me to ask around. I saw your thread posted in the other forum..I would be glad to ask around for you. Sheri
I didn't know you did Parrots as well...that is good to know that there are others out there wiling to help them too. So many focus on dogs and cats, you don't hear about the parrots unless your in the bird world.. Sheri
Yes I have done 2 macaws this year alone!!! I currently have a blue and gold needing a new home!! Unfortunatly I have to ask money for this one for all I have invested, normally I find homes for free.
Adoption fees you should ask for, man just feeding them along is so expensive and my birds don't eat cheap stuff..spoiled rotten I tell ya. Macaws will eat more then what all my 6 do here alone. And the toys, I know what they go through..I have 7 bins on toy parts here and not much time to make what I need, thankfully I don't have big wood chewers except for my Sun Conure Squeakers. Right now I don't know of anyone that is looking to adopt a macaw but I will keep my ears and eyes open for you. I'm not much of a macaw person, I do like the Blue Thoated macaw is one of my favs. Good luck finding a forever home for the one you have now. Sheri
Yeah i know and i love it:-D BTW, ok i know i shouldn't but what are the details on your B&G? How old, health, socialization, etc.? Adopting is a whole different ballgame than just fostering, i gotta make sure any newbie would fit in with Lucie and Indie:-D
She is a total doll!!! Honestly! I am very tempted to keep her, except 'my' blue and gold is a one bird bird!! I am not allowed to own another bird according to her. She is actually starting to pluck from this one being around too long!! But this one (not dna tested), she is 16, loves woman more than men. (or at least doesnt love my husband) great with my kids... and lets me flip her over on her back etc... she talks some, not tons... doesnt really yell, unless she decides I havent played with her enough. She needs a new cage, you could have the one she is in, but it is old and could be a bit bigger. For you, I would let you foster a bit and see if it works!!!
OMG she/he sounds awesome - let me run it by DH and i will let ya know. It would be nice to have a bird that is more attached to me than my DH (that is what ya get with 2 females - after me handfeeding and raising from the egg, they are always attracted to the opposite sex:lol Don't get me wrong, they love me and we totally are bonded but if a female macaw has her choice she will always go to the man first:-D Are you sure your B&G is femals? Has she been abused by a man therefore changing her preference? Oh yeah, what's her name?
She may be a he, never got her tested and she has never laid an egg. So who knows. It is only like $20 to do the test, I am just too lazy. :-D Well... when we first got her, her talons were soooo sharp I could barely hold her without bleeding. I didnt want to freak her out and get her clipped right away, so we left her like that for a few weeks. Her nickname became "spike" and it stuck! So maybe he is a he and his name is Spike!! Let me know if you want to come meet her/him. Honestly they get a bit nervous when new people come over and dont do as well as they usually do, but you can get a feel for her anyway.
Just talked to DH and he said ok as long as she/he gets along with Lucie and Indie - woohoo, i am happy, maybe it will keep me from missing Mayan so much. What day would be good for you? BTW, is this the same bird you rescued a while back that we talked about?
I've never kept a bigger bird, although we had a parakeet many years ago. So messy!! Are they all messy, or just the one we had? We are fascinated with them, although they probably wouldn't do well with the cats.
Yeah they are messy but not as bad as parakeets (my opinion) but that is why i no longer have a breakfast room, the birds have taken it over. It is in our long range plans to turn our existing deck into a sun room for our feathered family members when we get the expanded deck around the pool and hot tub built. As for getting along with cats, that is kinda like folks who say cats and dogs can't get along - it is all in how they are raised. Supposedly ferrets and birds are natural enemies but our birds and ferrets get along just fine.
Well, maybe one of these days we can add one to the menagerie. We've had some of just about everything else (no ferrets, I don't like them for some reason, don't know why:? ). Hamsters, parakeet, fish, dogs, cats, now the turtle...................gotta try 'em all!
Thanks ljk, he (i believe the bird is a he) is fitting in great so far. When i spoke with you earlier i mentioned we were gonna keep him in his cage for a few days to get acclimated but guess what, he wanted to come out into the garage with DH, me, and our other two birds - i was really surprised:-D
Congrats on the bird, and I hope it turns out well for you and the bird and he has his forever home. Sheri
Getting a bird is a big thing for me, and it is a life long choice when you get into the bigger birds, they get very bonded to their owners. Small or Big isn't something you should think long and hard on..not just to try it out and see if it works. Yes they are very messy, I find my conures messier then my smaller birds my teil and keet and plett, but then my grey is my cleanest bird and he is my biggest one. I don't see me every being owned by a macaw anytime soon, at least a few more yrs..like 5 or more. I want my daughter to be older. Plus I know I don't have anymore time for anymore animals lol. Sheri
I know what you mean with the space, I have 3 in my living room and 3 in my bedroom lol...they take over but they are worth it. My cats and dogs do great with my birds cause like you said it's how you raise them. Sheri
