I knew that SS. Maybe I need to clarify. So, if the base is lets say 10 negative squared you would have to turn something into a decimal correct? then borrow from the exponent? I am getting into loooong algebra problems and this is the only thing that turns me around. Want to tutor me? SS:lol: *No really*
Negative times a negative = a positive number. This can be best described as movement along a number line....or in cartesian coordinate geometry, where the X axis runs horizontally, and the Y axis runs vertically. At some point, the numbers can be negative... think sea level (not the town) but actual sea level. if sea level is the "o" point where anything above it is a positive number, then below it must be a negative number. Thirty feet above sea level, one can breathe without assistance. Thirty feet below, different outcome, unless one has a scuba type device. if the pressure at atmosphere is P at sea level...i think 14.7 lbs/sq in, but don't quote me...then pressure below is a function of increased pressure, whereas pressure above sea level decreases with height.
Well basically the rules with algebra are not going to be concrete. You can manipulate the formulas by simplifying them first. Then solving the problem. Just don't worry if your resolution does not look the same as other people in your class as long as your answers are correct. It's been a long time Since I have done Algebra. If you need a refresher go to www.purplemath.com
example.......(5.2 x 10 to the 4th) divide symbol (3.4 x 10 cubed) are the exponents to be the same to do this? I will check out website in a sec. just want to see if I can get this typing with someone.
Basically a negative exponent is like the reciprical of a positive exponent. So 10(-3) (that is, ten to the negative third) is the same as saying 1/10(3) (or, one over ten to the negative third)
Please excuse my dear aunt sally. Welp, boys and girls, that rounds up Kookoo's explanation of math.
In the problem above one is cubed and one is to the 4th. dont you have to move the decimal and take away exponents to complete it? I did get what you said clif....so one eighth is the same as eight -1 power?
.......(5.2 x 10 to the 4th) divide symbol (3.4 x 10 cubed) are the exponents to be the same to do this? So, the [problem above would be 5.2 x 3.4 x 10 right? after subtracting the exponents, it leaves just 10.
I can do geometry, trig, statistics (ugh) and physics but for the life of me i can not do algebra. To me, x*4-3y is an answer that means nothing to me.
I'm with you dear. Next time my daughter has an algebra question I will know where to send her. Grace
That would seem to be the case. Your problem: (5.2 x 10(4)) / (3.4 x 10(3)) Would be the same as (5.2 / 3.4) * 10(1)
I'd rather you change your avatar. It's not that it's scarey, it's just the jitteriness is annoying. If you can post it static, or at least slowed way down.
I agree with you on that one. Makes me all jumpy when I look at it. Clif...you did a great job. As I stated, I will send my daughter your way. Grace
