Posers on a Power Trip

You know, the arrogance of these rescue groups and SPCAs that go this route is incredible and quite telling regarding their true motives.

Several years ago, we went to the new "no kill" SPCA in Raleigh to get a kitty. We found one we wanted and filled out the application. We sat there for forever as they called our vet used for our dog, to verify that we weren't liars and did indeed get him shots and care. Then the lady advised me that she could not pull up my house deed online, insinuated I was lying about owning my house, and said I would not be allowed to adopt unless I went home and brought back a true copy to the deed of my house.

I was incredulous. I asked what my house deed had to do with adopting a kitten, and she said that they needed proof that I owned my house. I asked her "So...you don't give kittens to people who rent? Or what about people who live in apartments." She just looked at me and copped an attitude and said "You get to adopt only if WE say you can adopt."

This has nothing to do with caring about animals and everything in the world to do with people being on a smug power trip. And it's a shame for the animals because for a group that claims they want to find good homes for homeless animals...they sure make it as difficult as possible to give a good home to an animal.

I think this quote from the owner of the "Rescue" group involved, says it all...and just proves the point I made about these people being on a power trip:

    :x

She didnt follow the rules. I love ellen, dont get me wrong but she is wrong on this one.

cry all you want, the rules and agreement she signed still stand. Just because she is famous.....well, you know what I will say next.

I am sorry you were treated that way.... but the fact is people lie. There are hundreds of animals returned to shelters across our nation because people adopt and then the landlord finds out. (or worse, these animals are dumped somewhere else) so shelters have to get it ok'd with a landlord. The SPCA does adopt to renters, and apartment dwellers, but first with the ok of the owner of the property. They are doing it for the best interest of the animal, so he/she can get a forever home, not a temporary stop!!

Now HOW they do it is the problem!!!! But I was an adoption counselor there for a while, (hated it!!) I got so sick of people lying and dealing with people who were wanting a new animal yet their existing animal has not been to the vet in years, or they just gave their last two cats away, and want a new kitten bla bla bla. It really was beginning to give me a preconceived notion that everyone lied and I had to find the truth. (hence why I am not a counselor anymore!!)

So I agree that there is a problem, just disagree about what the problem is!

    Mag,
I totally agree with you on this one. I heard some commotion on television about Ellen but did not really listen. Reading your link makes me think that these people out for money and fame.

Who reads a contract when they sign it? If she signed some contract about the dog not being allowed to go to another family with less than a certain age she probably did not read it. I feel sorry for the dog and the girls whose heart is now broken.

People are just going too far!

who reads a contract when they sign it? so, because she "probably didn't read it", she shouldn't actually be held to what's in it?

like ljk said, there's a method to the madness. the rules are there for a reason. if the people are nasty about it, that's a different argument. but the rules exist. if you don't like them or don't agree, don't sign.

Yes, but do you really believe that the owners of this place would have made such a big stink about this if it were not Ellen. Understandably, if one signs a contract it should mean that they have read it, but in reality who reads the contract when renting a car or whatever? Either way...I feel sorry for the dog and kids.

    Plain and simple...

If the "rescue" shelters won't allow me to adopt, I'll go to a puppy farm.

    Problem solved.

I can see both sides on this. The puppy didn't work out and they found it a new home, they probably thought they were doing the right thing. But I don't think hysterics on either side are called for. A lesson in reading the fine print.

I've only ever had one experience with breed specific "rescue shelters". My ending opinion? Their in it for the money.

I agree . Thats why when I decide to get another pet it will be a akc or bought from a breeder the shelters are too picky they have their reasons but I don't want to deal with their crap. I have a dog shes getting a little older and I am thinking on getting another I am first checking into what breed I want.I will NOT be going to a shelter or spca to get one. I am a good pet owner and when I buy or get a dog its forever not just until I am tired of it like some people do. I think shelters turn down so many good people its just sad for the animals.

I do think Ellen should have followed the rules. Its sad for the kids but thats what the rules were .she should have read what she signed .

We went through a rescue once. We basically laughed in their faces, and found a free kitten via the 4042 classifieds. There is no need to treat perspective cat owners like criminals - that's what turned us off.

They have a rule to not allow the kids to keep the dog if the person who originally had it gave it away?

I understand rules, and are in favour of them. However, the "rescue" group could have vetted the new family and decided whether or not the transfer would be acceptable. They did not do this.

In short, they don't care about what might me good for the dog. All they care about is their own power in deciding who gets the animals.

Thats what is crazy they are sending this woman death threats! If they find out who these people are they need to be punished. Some people loose their minds when it comes to animals they get a little nuts over animals rights but the hell with peoples rights I guess. Don't get me wrong I love my dog to the point I would just about die for her if it come down to it.I have had her since I was a child. But, what kind of NUT gos around making death threats to a woman who placed a dog in another home the dog is safe and is being taken care of. Ellen can go buy them kids another dog. They will learn a lesson read what you sign your name too and sometimes life ain't fare!

The shelter owners ...bless their hearts ...think they're actually making a difference by being selective. Meanwhile the puppy mills are churning out more puppies than anyone will ever need, there are more unwanted kittens than you can shake a stick at, and the number killed by the pounds would boggle your mind and is steadily rising. All of this is made possible by "animal lovers".

Same here. I know a few people who felt the same way too. Why be treated like chit from a shelter when you can get one for almost nothing some where else and they are glad to see you leave with them.

I couldn't agree more! If it hadn't been Ellen, I don't think the rescue group would have done anything about this..period!

I agree, was thinking the same myself. Why didn't this rescue group simply just interview and check this family out to see if that they were right for the dog, seemed a no brainer to me. I think they were on a power trip and got ****ed at Ellen and decided to use her to make a point about people that break their contracts, "WE'LL SHOW HER" "HOW DARE SHE BREAK THE RULES", meanwhile the dog is uprooted and some nice family has to deal with the sadness of having a pet taken away because someone was PMSing that week.

Actually I believe these people would have anyway.

Um, actually no. She didn't know it (yes, she should have, since she signed it).
