I stopped by the gas station at 42 and Cornwallis to have a sandwich at the deli there today at lunch but it is closed and cleaned out. I believe it was Fat Boy's Deli. When did it close?
We stopped there the other night, I thought the sign said they were remodeling.....maybe for a new owner?
Rumor has it the owner of the gas station raised Fat Boy's deli rent significantly. Fat Boy's was originally given a break in rent because the gas station needed a restaurant in its establishment in order to sell beer. Now that the Cleveland area passed beer sales, the restaurant is no longer needed- so the owner raised the rent making it difficult for Fat Boy's to continue. I also heard the Gas station owner wanted a restaurant that can remain open 24 hours. I heard Subway will be moving in and offering breakfast. I never knew Subway had breakfast!
Auctioned fixtures October 3rd, Note said that the proprietors will not be opening another restaurant. Must have been ugly circumstances.
I had lunch in there several times and there were always others there and while in there there would be 2-3 take out orders. It always came in 2nd best when deciding between Big Steves and Fat Guys. I wish Big Steve would open a location in Clayton.
It would be ugly if the owner forced you out, which is apparently what has happened. This is the same thing that happened to White Swan. Change is not always for the better. We will not be eating at whatever opens in it's place. In fact, we never buy gas there since Citgo is controlled by a communist Venezulan dictator.
Still don't care, if your resturant is connected to a gas station it is highly unlikely I will ever darken your door. Only reason I knew about the auction was I thought there was a posting about what would go in next (that and I had to pay for that socialist gasoline).
We had stopped in several times. Food was good, portions were generous. Too bad that the gas side of the house wasn't as customer service oriented as he deli. I was in there once and a person with fairly thick glasses asked a man behind the counter if they could check the lotto ticket, explaining that their vision made it difficult to read the light print. There was no one else in line, 2 people behind the counter, apparently doing nothing. The rude response was "we don't do that." Have somebody else read your numbers for you. That was all I needed to hear. Since then, I haven't spent a dime in the gas side. The behavior of the owner, as reported above, fits the pattern. And I, for one, will not support it.
I go there when I have to, because it's 1 min. from my home. I really hate Thurman doesn't own it anymore, it was great when he did. Too bad about the Deli, I've gotten boars head from them several times and it was always good!
Why did Thurman sell right after it was built? And why the heck did he open so late and close so early?
No way! We've eaten at Gandolfo's, now Formano's and Fat Guys was way better than both of them. The food, value and service were outstanding. It was one of the few places (White Swan was another) I felt I could go and eat by myself and not be hassled.
