So I was in Wally World tonight picking up a few things...........needed milk. Pet milk was $6.12!! Holy Moly! I ended up with Walmart brand, which was less than $4, which I normally get if I have to get it at Walmart. Stopped by Walgreens later and the same Pet milk is $3.99, regular price. What the heck?? Lower prices my hiney!
3 boys + 1 husband = 6 gallons of milk each week...no I'm not kidding. I've been threatening to buy a cow for years. (and goats to keep the lawn short)
When I was little, my mother raised me all by herself. We were so poor that she had to buy powdered milk for my nutrient needs. It was very cheap to buy. All you have to do is to add water to it. The bad part about powdered milk is it's doesn't taste too great, but still get calcium for your body. As for today, I do not know if they're still selling it. It make me curious how much it is cost today, comparing to the cost of real milk. I think Walmart might sell it because I know some people buy it for making dessert for the holidays.
Ohhh yukky...powdered milk. For a while, my dad (who was in the Air Force) was stationed at SHAPE, so we lived in Belgium for about 8 months. Milk was sold in bags, which for some reason made my mother not trust it. So we only got powdered milk. Gray water in your cereal....especially bad if it wasn't made the night before, because then she mixed it in the morning. Room temperature gray water in your cereal. :shock:
I quit buying Wal-Mart brand milk because I read (believe it was on Snopes) that they indeed use milk from cows that have been given hormones to produce more milk. Other companies may do that as well, but knowing that for a fact sort of turned me off to their milk. I saw that $6.12 for PET, too. We usually go middle of the road and go for Maola, which is a little cheaper than PET. I've noticed though that Wal-Mart tends to be just as high (in some cases higher) as the grocery stores. Actually, Food Lion seems to be cheaper on milk.
$3.69 at Harris Teeter, all day everyday, for a gallon we go throough about 4-5 gallons a week and OJ too.
I get the LF brand and trade in greenpoints soooo, I get my milk for FREE :mrgreen: I'm cool like that
I just got back from Lowe's Foods and bought a gallon of milk for $3.16. I was really looking because of this Thread and was shocked that the majority were around that same amount. Leave Wally World for Lowe's and save some. Grace
And as Faye has taught us (also known as Frugal Mom of 2) with double, and sometimes triple coupons, the food is usually cheaper and better quality.
Oh, I am an avid couponer and haunt Lowe's frequently, was just in there last night getting some of those sirloins they have on sale. I was just absolutely shocked at the price of a gallon of Pet at Walmart. It's crazyness.
I am unsure why Walmart is just so down right higher than other stores on some items. I thought they were the store for those who could not afford the higher priced ones. Maybe they don't consider Lowe's one of those but for goodness sakes twice the amount...that's just horrible. Thanks for the fried rice recipe. Grace
We don't drink alot of milk.. I try to keep it on hand, but usually it ends up being tossed before its all gone. You can still by the powedered milk, Carnation is one brand... I keep it for incase of emergencies. If the power is out it can be used, if I only need a little bit for cooking or coffee, and/or if what I have in the refrig. is past the "use by" date. Growing up my aunt & uncle were in the service and she always made powdered milk, with 3 kids I guess it was cheaper, especially at the PX on base. I never liked to drink it, but it was alright in cereal I guess. My mom was the one who kept it on hand for emergencies, and I just follow tradition I guess.
Harley, I shop at Lowes Foods and they are always asking if I want to redeem my points (I have about 70K sitting in my S&H account right now), but I never have before. How many points do you have to redeem for a gallon of milk?
When i was growing up with 5 of us kinds, my Mom would buy 1/2 gallon of whole milk and mix it with powdered mild to make a whole gallon to save money and honestly, mixing it that way we never knew the difference.
I think it's like 4200? I just placed a HUGE order online with Cabelas for DH so we should have a BUNCH of points now!!! YES!
